View Full Version : Sabres still talking and interested in Teppo Numminen

Just spoke to Darcy Regier about Craig Rivet. He had the usual plaudits any GM might have about a new player just acquired in a trade and then ended the thought with this succinct point that was the perfect summation: "He's someone we need."
The thing I found most interesting was that Regier did not discount the possibility of getting another defenseman. And he specifically mentioned the Sabres are still talking and interested in Teppo Numminen. Maybe a one-year deal for $1 million might be something for both sides to consider there.

I wouldn't mind Teppo back. The type of game he plays really can't hurt us. He is very sound defender where age isn't a factor when performing for him.

Oh, I'd love Teppo for that price. Puts Paetsch at #7 and allows Weber to start the season in Portland and wait for injuries.

Teppo is still my man-crush.
SIGN TEPPO!

An NHL team will probably go throught at least eight defensemen in a season if not more. That would give us seven that could play in most teams starting lineup. Sign him up.

That would give us 2 greybeards on the backline...Im all for that. As good as our offense was, it happened to be feast or famine. I think if we go into games defensive minde, allow the offense to spark itself...we should be fine.

I think they should give tempo the old yeller treatment.

They missed Teppo almost as much as Drury. If he comes back, I'm really happy with our defense.

Are they looking at Teppo as an unofficial player-coach? That would be interesting.

I would rather have Smith, but would definitely take Teppo. He did look very good vs Boston.

Im all for Teppo at a million.
With the type of game he plays, age really isn't a factor. He knows where he needs to be to cut off the pass or not allow a good shot opprotunity.
He would also be very valuable in the developement of a defenseman like Sekera.

Thats a good price for Teppo, bring him in to play with Sekara, and Peatsch can spell him when he needs a night off and Weber could get the time he needs in Portland to fully develop his game. That would be a good situation.

I want Teppo back too.
Stupid mistakes and bad turnovers are killers...and Teppo is good at not doing that. I'll be happy with anyone in the back that can just play smart.
Especially since it looks like Max will still be up front for us...meaning enough stupid turnovers coming our way already.
...
Now if only we could find a way to counteract Max going offsides and killing multiple rushes a game.

Teppo and Rivet would bring stability to a young team. Just don't let Teppo take his lame wrist shot from the point. It is God-awful and usually gets blocked.

Teppo and Rivet in the lockerroom is huge. It also changes the dynamic at the end of the game. You don't have to rely on Tallinder and Lydman for the entire time. With Rivet, Spacek and Numminen there's a tremendous amount of experience for Lindy to rely on. I would re-sign Teppo in a heartbeat.

You did not just out heart and Teppo in the same sentence!!! I never want to see those to words together even if it is for a good reason. It just scares me.

maybe I'm making too much out of it, but, Teppo is a terrific play starter. What I mean is, he knows where to pass the puck when he has it in our zone. he also has a lot of poise when clearing the zone and he has a calming influence out there when the pressure is on in the defensive zone.
I love it that he can make the solid out of the zone pass. I think it was something we missed as our defenders struggled to effectively make that first pass.
I know Soupy had the whole puck carrying attribute, which was seen as something we might need to replace, but I'd rather have that first pass skill of a defenseman, that is a a very good quality in my opinion.

That 1 million bucks buys us a decent d man, a leader, coach, time for weber/et al.... probably the best way to spend a million bucks i guess. I'll take it. Plus, he knows our system and thats always good!

I wouldn't mind signing him and Pratt to contracts for the right price. We could use Teppo for games where some offensive minded plays are needed, and use Pratt to give him a rest and bring in some grit.

Maybe we can sign Teppo, and in part of the deal get all the players to use his company's sticks. It's a win-win baby!

No, youre not making too much out of it. A defenseman with composure to do the right thing under pressure is invaluable.
