The first time I watched a DVD, I thought, what is the big deal? However, the first time I watched a movie on VHS after numerous DVD viewings, I realized how much better those little disks are. Yes, the picture and sound are better, but what I really think makes them a whole lot better is the fact that they are presented in a widescreen format (most of them anyway).

My question to you guys and gals is: Should/will some/all of televised sports be shown in a wide screen format?

I have noticed that during the last year or so, many commercials have been presented in this fashion. Are some or all of televised sports next?

I would like to see it happen with football and hockey. Especially football

I think it would be pointless for NBA and baseball.

Although you still wouldn't be able to see what goes on WAY down-field, wouldn't it be great to be able to see Moulds battling with Madison and at the same time, see Bledsoe throw a perfect spiral lazer, instead of just watching Bledsoe throw the pigskin and then have the camera follow the ball to Moulds, leaving the audience wondering what Moulds did to get open?

Your input would be much appreciated since I am VP of CBS sports operations.

HDTV broadcasts entirely in wide screen. Unfortunatly, most of the country is lagging behind in HDTV transmission. When I went shopping for my big screen tv 18 months ago, I had the pleasure of watching a re-run of one of the first NFL games ever broadcast in HDTV, a Bills/Jets game with DF at QB.

The best thing about watching NFL football in letterbox form is watching the play develop. In the widescreen setup, you see all 22 players on the screen before the snap. You see who was wide open on the pass, you see all the downfield blocking on kicks, and you can see the Blitz coming before the QB does.

Literally, the best thing to being there....

Interesting. I did not know it was offered.

However, it would be nice if broke-a$$ students such as myself could get it on our sanyo 19-inch TVs via basic cable.

Nope- you need an HDTV TV set, an HDTV transmitting TV station in your neighborhood, and cable is useless because they also do not transmit in HDTV.

The best choices are move to New York City (there a re a number of stations there that have limited HDTV broadcast capability) or get an HDTV Direct TV satelite receiver. I do know all the latest Superbowls have been broadcast in HDTV.

But the TV you have will never receive an HDTV signal.

do you think that football games will ever be broadcast in widescreen for regular TV's? (w/ the blackend areas on the top and bottom of the screen)
