Dominik Hasek is expected to announce his retirement on Monday.
The Detroit Red Wings have scheduled a news conference for 11am EST on Monday. Hasek has had a long and successful career, but the Red Wings appear to be moving on. Osgood is expected to be Detroit's starting goaltender next season with Jimmy Howard serving as the team's backup. Jun. 8 - 10:35 pm et

I think he was the most dominant player the Sabres ever had so for me it's a no brainer. I don't care how he left, he was an MVP.

I'm not a fan of Hasek as a person. But I have NEVER seen anyone consistently dominate hockey games the way he did in the mid to late 90s. I'm not quite sure anyone has ever played at as high of a level as Hasek in his prime, at any position. There is no doubt that his number gets retired.

We will retire his number eventually, it took us almost 10 years to retire Lafontaine's and even longer for Gare.

He certainly gave us a hell of a show when he was here in Buffalo. I hope they retire it, but you never know.

it should be retired for sure, he made an average sabre team a contender for years.

He almost single-handedly won us a Stanley Cup. And he might have if the refs knew what the crease meant. I think its a good idea.

I think there is no question, Hasek was the best goalie all-time.

Definitely agree. There hasn't been another goalie in my life time that instilled more fear in the opponent. There was a sense of invincibility with Hasek. There was definitely the same sense of hopelessness when playing Brodeur and the Devils, but that was always half attributed to the Devils defense and their trap. Nobody playing Hasek's Sabres was worried about the Sabres defense or their system, it was all Hasek. And don't even bring up Roy. He was good, but Roy never instilled that feeling for me even a little bit.

He was a headscratcher at times, but he's likely a future HOF. I loved watching him play, and I still have a poster of him in my classroom.
Pax.

It's not close. Roy had scoring help.
Brodeur had the boring trap.
Lets not forget equipment also. Hasek was always the smallest goalie in equipment.
Roy and Broduer looked twice their size.

hasek is probably the most talented sabre ever. but i'd only retire his number if he wants to retire as a sabre and go to the hall as a sabre.

Only in Canadian minds. If Hasek had been Canadian it wouldn't even be a conversation.

Honestly, I don't think its close at all. You could certainly argue that Roy had a better overall career with his longevity and success. But anyone who has watched both play...Hasek was just out of everyone's league at his best. He was undeniably the leagues best player in his prime, by a LONG shot. Although Roy played much of his career during Lemieux and Gretzky, he was never the best player in the league. Roy was great, solid, a championship goalie. Hasek was ridiculous, there won't be another like him.

People were always saying that. But if he was on the team, how could it only be average? I mean, he was so great, some made it seem as if it were cheating to have him playing. But Gerry Meehan plucked him out of the dumper. John Muckler was too stupid to play him over an injured Fuhr against Montreal in '93 (I think) when the Stanley Cup was up for grabs. He led us to the '99 Final, I used to hate it when people said we only got there because of Hasek. He was part of the team !! His number should be retired, but they better wait, because he'd probably get booed now.

The team he played on was nothing but average. True he was on said team, but without him the team would have floundered and lord knows if the Sabres would have lasted.
It's true, without Hasek we don't make the Finals. Case closed.
