“The United Nations warned that at least 10 million people face starvation in four southern African countries unless the international community acts swiftly. Four million of these are in Zambia.”

There are ways to help.

Let's see. The last time we tried to stop a famine in a war torn part of Africa, 19 AMerican soldiers died and two had their bodies dragged through the streets.

I'll be glad to send the Red Cross or Red Crescent in there, but keep the US OUT!!

Write to Kofi Annan and tell him to mend his own backyard. The stupid bastard mofo is anti-American, anti-Isreal. Maybe he should mind his own people. Meanwhile he travels around in expensive "kings attire." I wouldn't mind seeing him mauled by a lion.

I'm sorry you haven't inspired much sympathy, Reeves. I expect that my own denomination will send out an appeal soon. Our church supports a medical missionary in Mozambique. I expect that we'll respond. I think that the reaction you've seen here is the result of the fact that media has brought the whole world to our attention and wears out our ability to be sympathetic. The Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Afghanistan, and a dozen other places and tragedies have assaulted our senses over the years, and people have just decided they can't help everybody. Anti-American sentiments, whatever the cause, don't help matters. Here is a story that inspires me.

There was a man who took a walk on the beach after a storm. The beach was covered with starfish washed up by the storm. Far ahead on the otherwise deserted beach he saw a person who moved as if dancing. He came closer and realized it was a boy picking up the starfish one by one and throwing them back into the ocean. "There are so many you'll never make a difference," the man told the boy.

The boy looked at the starfish he was holding, and threw it back into the sea. "I made a difference to that one," he said, and knelt to pick up another.

Super post Tiger. I expect we'll do our share as well.
Does bring up a bigger point though. As I've stated in other posts, two-hundred plus years ago, this culture had the stones to throw off a government that was obviously more concerned about it's longevity and enrichment than the well being of it's citizens, and did something about it. The entire continent of Africa, and to a large extend, South America, has allowed these despots to rule and prosper without making that critical decision that they've had enough. We can, and have, supported them all we should. At some point they have to take up arms and overthrow the rulers. I'd have a lot easier time supporting them if they did.
