The long-awaited joining of the Buffalo Sabres and Portland Pirates will become official this afternoon in Maine. The Pirates are holding a news conference at 1 p. m. to announce the Sabres will be their new parent club.

The minor-league affiliation agreement has been rumored since December, when the Sabres announced their 29-year relationship with Rochester would end after the 2007-08 season. Portland was eliminated from the American Hockey League’s Eastern Conference playoffs late last month, and it ended its three-year deal with the Anaheim Ducks last week.

Several members of the Sabres’ organization were expected to attend to-day’s unveiling at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Supposedly it's 3 years with an option at the end of the 3rd to extend for 2 more. Not all that long term. Kind of sad they lost Rochester. It was cool always having the same affiliation.

Well within 3 years we will know whether or not we'll ever get Rochester back. If Portland and Buffalo work well together for 3 years and Golisano can't buy the Amerks outright we will choose to extend the deal. Kind of sucks we won't get to watch our own players anymore, unless someone gets a tv deal for Pirates games. The travel will be longer and more expensive for call ups, but that's what we could do for ourselves. Still should be fun to see how our boys do next season.

that would be incredible, if they struck a deal so our market got Pirates games. I would def watch

Time Warner Sportsnet Buffalo would be perfect channel to show the Portland Pirates games.

Now what would be awesome if Portland can play a game in Buffalo, maybe even a game vs Rochester? wouldn't that be an akward situation? of course it could get good attendence with the Sabres fans coming out to see the Pirates and then Amerk fans coming down from Rochester to see their team. At the very worst, hope the AHL schedules a Pirates game in Rochester (and not on a night where the Sabres have a home game!) so we can travel down and see our team play.

As long as Donner is in charge of Amerks, screw them. He may not own the team now, but he still owns 40% and is president of the Amerks.

I hope they put the Sabres logo on the shoulder of their jersey like they had the Ducks, I would get a jersey then. I see the ones with the Ducks logo has dropped in price in their store.

As for them playing the Amerks in Rochester, it would be fun, and I would go down and root for the Pirates, but the New England teams very rarely make a trip to Rochester.

Don't have a link to the story, but Portland's owner said they will have the logo of their NHL parent club on their shoulder.
