This is both good and bad for the Sabres. Good because the NHL is on the rise, bad because the NHL is on the rise.

The Pittsburgh Penguins were not the only winner last night.

Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals drew a 4.3/8 overnight last night, up 72% from a 2.5 for last year's clinching Game 5, which was played on a Wednesday. The rating peaked with a 5.8/10 from 11:00-11:30 PM.

NBC averaged 5.8 million viewers, according to preliminary numbers, good for a fourth place finish for the night. Among adults 18-49, NBC drew a 2.5/7 among, tying CBS for the top spot in the demo.

The 4.3 is the highest overnight ever for an NHL telecast on NBC, ahead of a 4.1 for Game 7 of the Hurricanes/Oilers series two years ago. The 4.3 is the highest for Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals since 2002, when Red Wings/Hurricanes Game 5 drew a 4.5/8. Additionally, the rating is the best for any NHL game since the very last game before the lockout -- Game 7 of the Lightning/Flames series in 2004 drew a 5.4/9.

In prime time (from 8:00-11:00 PM), the game drew a 3.8/6 overnight. The 3.8 prime time overnight did not factor in the three overtimes, which caused the game to air until around 12:50 AM last night in the home markets of Pittsburgh and Detroit. http://sportsmediawatch.blogspot.com/2008/06/classic-game-nets-big-overnight.html

Games 3, 4, and 5 have been really really entertaining. Pens / Detroit final was just about best case scenario for the league far as American television goes.

Yeah, cap's supposed to jump like 6 mil for next year which is unreal. It's amazing none of these leagues seem to be able to balance themselves when it comes to a CBA. Baseball's a joke, Football is ****ed up, and the NHL threw away an entire season for basically no reason. Does the NBA work any better? I'm not a fan.

The cap keeps rising because the leagues keep making money.

The NHL as a whole makes a boat load of money.

All the leagues make a lot of money.

He's a douchebag. I guess when you constantly have all these fat out of shape dentists walking up to you and telling you what a great athlete you are, you eventually start to buy into it. You swing a golf club **** face, you have no right to look down on real athletes playing a real sport.

Well, the disparity is rising to pre-lockout levels again. The Big markets will continue to spend up to the cap allowing them to sign the big name FA's, the small markets will have to play closer to the floor so they stay eligible for revenue sharing. I guess it's still better than Baseball where every single big name FA goes to one of two teams.

There is revenue sharing now in the NHL, so it is still a better situation for small market teams, but like the NFL, revenue sharing can only do so much.

I like the NHL's system better than the NFL's system now. In the NHL you have to wait 7 years or until age 27 to become an UFA. The NHL also has a rookie cap.

I cant complain about the cap going up because we all knew it would happen.

NBA is possibly worse than the NHL. Because they have their huge guaranteed contracts, yet they're even bigger prima donnas.

I think by far the NFL was the best. I love contracts without guarantees. It means the players actually have to play well. Amazing concept! But now they're heading into deep dark territory soon with all of this no-cap crap in a few years. I'm really kinda depressed over that. Parity may soon go by the wayside.

The NFL system also brings some negatives, as in player holdouts because they can get cut anyday.

Plus the rookie contracts. Both the NHL and NBA make players earn their 1st big contract.

haha come on pigpen...i dont like that Tiger said that either, but he is the best golfer off all time IMO....not everyone likes every sport! There are plenty of people who dont like sports such as soccer(me included, unless it is the World Cup) Lax...just the Bandits...baseball i cannnnnnnot watch unless my Mariners are on, which never happens in Buffalo or the World Series.

How could it hurt the Sabres if the NHL TV revenue goes up and is shared amongst the teams ala NFL. The extra 5-6 mil could come from national and regional fees alone.

As for the series - exceptional games 3/4/5. I wanted Pitt to win so I could watch another game.

I would love to see Tiger say that in front of a hockey player... he would be crapping his 3 wood for a week.

Regardless if he likes hockey or not, it's an extremely condescending thing to for him to say about a major professional sport. Especially coming from him. If it was an NFL player or NBA player it would be one thing, but a golfer talking shit about hockey? Athletically they aren't even in the same galaxy. A golfer would be justified giving his opinions on bowling or any of the other "sport" where you can drink and smoke cigars while you're competing. But not hockey.

I really doubt Tiger would tremble in fear of Danny Briere. :angel1:

It was a stupid comment but to be fair, there is a big part of the country that feels the same way. Say whatever you want about Tiger, but he transformed an enitre sport. Whatever the reason (marketing?), the NHL so far hasn't been able to do this despite having a ton of young stars. Hopefully, the finals is a sign of things to come.

Guaranteed contracts are the worse. I am still amazed that the most profitable sport and the one that has the shortest careers, football, still doesn't have guaranteed contracts.

But the NBA has some really good young players and had a very good playoffs. IMO, both the NBA and NHL are on the berth of a big time renaissance.
