Did he struggle this season because he was on a crappy team or is he just not as good as his brothers...

Jared Staal Article (http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=362606)

Jared Staal, the 17-year-old forward for the Sudbury Wolves, is a bit of a cautionary tale for scouts.

To whom, exactly, do you compare him?

Do you examine his strengths and weaknesses as compared to the other top 2008 NHL Entry Draft-eligible forwards, like Steven Stamkos, Kyle Beach and Colin Wilson? Or do you measure him against one of his three NHL-playing older brothers, Eric, Marc and Jordan?

“We caution to not weigh it too heavily,” said Central Scouting Director E.J. McGuire of the Staal family name. “I think it’s a factor that should be brought in, but how far into the inner ring do you bring it?”

That will be the question facing the 30 NHL teams when they convene in Ottawa on June 20-21 for the 2008 Entry Draft.

Jared, the youngest of four brothers from the now-famed town of Thunder Bay, Ontario, had a strong second season in the Ontario Hockey League. In 60 games, he led the Wolves with 21 goals and was second with 49 points on a team that scored the fewest goals in the OHL. He also was named to the OHL All-Star Game. More... (click link above)

I'd be very hesitant to even use our second rounder on him. He's a very poor skater, he's not that great with the puck, and he doesn't use his size to his advantage. The upsides are that he sees the ice well and thinks the game well, but I just don't see a whole lot there as far as physical skills go.

Just out of curiosity, how do you know and when have you seen him play?

I am a big supporter of drafting family members of successful NHL players because you know that their siblings will be giving them help and pointers all the time, especially when those siblings are more then established NHL caliber players.

I've seen him play a few times (never live though) and I read every single piece of news on draft eligible prospects I can get my hands on.

I remember hearing about two years ago that Jared was going to be the best of the four, the Sabres really must be wishing that Marc would have dropped one more spot in 05. But who knows about Jared, grade him out on his own merits, not based on his brothers' success.

...what am I missing here? The guy asked me how I know and when I've seen him play and I answered the question...

Yeah, that was a quote by the father who said Jared was the best which he later corrected saying he mis-spoke and he meant to say Jordan was the best, not Jared. Having Marc Staal over Zagrapan would be huge, M Staal is exactly what the team needs.

Remember a Sabre's 3rd round pick by the name of Keith Gretzkey?
