As summer starts, strappy sandals and teeny-weeny bikinis come out of the closet, inciting a rush to salons for nail care and waxing appointments.

But the dirty secrets lurking in some salons can brew infections that make people with otherwise polished bods want to cover up.

The health risks associated with the beauty industry, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, include viral infections such as HIV, hepatitis B and C, and warts, as well as bacterial and fungal infections.

I went to buy my mother a gift certificate at her nail salon for mothers day. I was bothered to see that there were men in there getting their nails done. That's pretty queer if you ask me.

I've seen that before, BF1. Thanks for the reminder. :) They also tell you to see how clean they are with the instruments they use. Or, you can bring your own set of tools that you take care of and maintain. And, unfortunately, the cheaper the prices are in the salon, the lower their standards may be for keeping things clean and sanitary. The solutions used to keep the instruments clean are expensive and if the salon isn't making a lot of money, they're going to go cheap on some things. There's a machine that is in high end salons that is used to clean the instruments. Kind of like what they use in doctors offices and hospitals. The salon I was originally going to was a cheap place and didn't have one of those things. I went from paying $20 for a manicure to $38, every two weeks, :( But, it's worth it. This is my health we're taking about and I don't want to end up like some of those women.

Thanks for reminding me, I've gotta make my next appointment. :) And this one is going to be really expensive....$80 (manicure/pedicure). :( Sometimes it sucks being a woman. lol
