“What do you do with the flowers?” asked Jackie.
“My friends eat them,” said Bob, “and smoke ‘em.”
“They smoke flowers?!”
“Yep. Doctors, teachers, artists, actors, even mayors and presidents. Marijuana makes some people feel happy. Other people say it’s ‘dreamy.’”
“Why do you use it, Farmer Bob?” asked Jackie.
“I don’t,” he said. “It just puts me to sleep!”

Absolutely. I couldn't agree more. The "Just Say No" campaign has nothing to do with parents. It was another simplistic and completely ineffective strategy in the WOD.
Nonetheless, I was just pointing out the seeming incongruity of O'Reilly making even a lukewarm comment about such a book.

I'd rather see a cigarette book come out. Too many kids are smoking these days and whatever preventative measures are being used, aren't working.
I believe cigarettes are more available than marijuana and cigarettes are more harmful. Whether or not it's because of peer pressure or they see their parents do it, they are smoking tobacco and nothing good is going to come out of it.
This particular book about marijuana is unnecessary and looks more like an advertisement rather than an educational resource.
Someone brought up the book, "Everyone Poops." This is used in many elementary classrooms. The reason why teachers use it is to get rid of the fascination with kids talking about it. It really can be a pain in the ass when you got a handful of kids talking about poop in class, causing distractions. Same thing about farting.
However, I rarely, if ever, hear any fourth grader talking about sparking up a j behind the monkey bars. It's just not necessary. But, if you're a parent that smokes and wants to explain to your kids why you do it, I guess thats what you got to do.
heh, here's a book about smoking I found, sounds kinda funny...
Cigarette Sue is an interesting story about five young girls and their very first experience smoking cigarettes. After some effective peer pressure from their friend Sandy, the girls try some of her cigarettes. They decide to play a smoking game only to realize that the game goes terribly wrong. Sue and her friends quickly conclude that smoking makes them nauseous and sick, causes them to smell horribly and subsequently earns them disapproval from Sue's mother for their foolish behavior. After some pointed questions and clear guidance from her mother, Sue decides that smoking is not something she wants to continue. She instead seeks her mother's approval and continued good health instead of smoking. This book is appropriate for children in grades one to five. Learn more about the author at www.CigaretteSue.com

I don't think this book is intended as schoolroom indoctrination. I think the intended market is for parents that do smoke marijuana and understandably are concerned that they are going to be turned in by their children who are steeped by schools in the whole fear of anything that the government classes as a controlled substance.
Some of you guys seem to applaud the book itself. Not just the uproar it causes.

I'd actually make the marijuana smoking age 27, precisely because that is roughly the age when smoking weed can no longer contribute to the development of schizophrenia. Depending on your genetic makeup (say 6% chance of developing schizophrenia), smoking weed can make it 10 times higher @ 60%.

One 15-year study of 50,000 young people in Sweden, for example, found those who had tried marijuana by the time they were 18 were 2.4 times more likely to receive a diagnosis of schizophrenia. The Swedish researchers concluded that 13 per cent of schizophrenia cases could be averted if all cannabis use was prevented.

What is deceitful? The title? Come on. Compared to the hysteria that it makes you a homicidal sociopath, it is "just a plant". Therein lies the motivation for the understatement.
Sure it's written for a child's level of understanding, but the intended market is parents that smoke ganj and want their children to understand that marijuana is not the killer drug that their teachers may be telling them.
I honestly can't see how anyone could be upset about this. If the book doesn't appeal to you then don't buy it. The aim is not to get kids to smoke dope, but to understand that marijuana is a safe recreational drug to use by adults.
