View Full Version : Ive never been this unsure of the Bills 1st pick

I have no idea what direction they will go with their 1st pick. Normally I can narrow it down to a few names, but this year there are 10 + players I could see the Bills drafting.
James Hardy
Limas Sweed
Devin Thomas
DRC
Mike Jenkins
Antoine Cason
Brandon Flowers
Derrick Harvey
Keith Rivers
Phillip Merling
Aqib Talib
If they arent sold on our OL, which I think they are, that would add 3-4 more players.
Am I the only one that feels this way?
IMO, it sets the Bills up perfectly to trade down, maybe even multiple times.
I would bet the Bills are having the same thoughts. They have to be itching to trade down. There is no way they can pinpoint a player at 11, atleast IMO.

The Bills are going to get the guy that nobody is expecting to fall; Dorsey.

Who was the name du jour the year we took Whitner?
Ngata right.
I'm never sure of the direction we'll go... taking Whitner and Simpson, Lynch and Wright...we're not afraid to make picks... and l;ately IMO they've worked out well...

I dont think I've ever been so unsure of who will be the #1 overall pick 5 days before the draft...
Chris? Jake? Vernon?
Who the hell knows? More importantly... has the media ever not known who it will be this close to the draft? They all seem to be taking stabs in the dark?

Ngata and Bunkley right?
Yeah..Bunkley too...
But we picked up McCargo who looks like he'll be a pretty solid player.

It is a lot harder on the media to predict this sort of thing when there isn't a QB in the conversation.

I actually said the day before the draft dont be surprised if we draft Whitner, just not at 8.
Bunkley was my main guy that year though. Tamba Hali was 2nd. Whitner came into the picture the last week of the draft.
Last season I was all about Patrick Willis, Poz , and Lynch. A little bit for Leon Hall.
This year I have no idea who to go for. I like Hardy, but I like a lot of other players, no one is standing out.
Maybe our dreams will come true and one of the DT's fall this year.

Answer...I think that is what is going to make this draft more exciting.
Last year as the pick approached I think we generally got the feeling it would be Willis/Poz/Marshawn...then P-Will was taken so that knocked it down to just Poz and Marshawn...
(I love taking every chance I can get to reminisce about the fact that the Bills got 2 of our top pick-12 targets in 07.)

Brandon Flowers would be a Whitner type pick this year I think. A pick that would shock people first (at 11, at least) but which they'd grow to like later.

On the Monday before the draft I think its between D.Thomas and L.McKelvin
I think the Bills will sit back and see what falls them at 11. If McKelvin gets there I think he will be the pick and we'll WR in round 2
If McKelvin doesnt get there then I think Thomas is the guy at which point the Bills will debate
A.If they can move down and still get him
B.How far can they go down
C.Is it worth the risk of moving down and possible missing out on the player they want
D.Should they just take him at 11
Should be interesting and I expect them to take most if not all of the 10 mins

C.Is it worth the risk of moving down and possible missing out on the player they want
This is the biggest anti-trade down argument.
I think a trade down happens if Buffalo comes on the clock and decides they don't value anyone at pick 11 (seems unlikely).
But if there is at least one player who they KNOW they want...why risk it?
The Bills aren't the only team to ever "reach" for a player. And if the Bills trade back, what is stopping another WR-starved team from saying "here's our chance!" and leap-frogging the later Bills pick to take the guy Buffalo wanted all along?

I hope someone is frothing at the mouth for our 11th pick. We need to scoot back.

#11 is a good spot. We may have some top 5 or top 10 player drop and take him. We may have somebody drop and another team trades up. My hope is that there are a couple of surprises in the top 10 and some mouth-watering player drops and somebody in the lower part of the 1st round offers their first and second rounder for him. Then we get 3 players in the top 80 or so and improve greatly.

it seems all the writers at USA TODAY are pretty sure we are drafting a cornerback

I think you're going to blow everyone's mind and take Matt Ryan. Whether or not you keep him after that remains to be seen, but if i'm going to doll out 70 Million dollars with half of it being guarantees to a rookie player, i'm probably going to be more comfy doing it with a potential franchise QB.
I guess a DE or LT would be equally worth of that money if the player was elite. It just seems like Ryan is the guy most worthy of that kind of money right now. Even if you don't technically need him.
I'm telling you man, the #1 overall pick sucks to have.

i really think its down to 3 with Thomas being the fron runner followed by Jenkins and DRC.

I thougth you were more unsure of position than specific person. Rarely does anyone know who any team is specifically going to draft past the top 3 or 4 teams.
I guess i would be happy with a CB, so long as they can contribute immediately. We play the high flying Hawks in game one. Would be nice to have a field ready quality CB in place to play nickel or 2nd CB.
I am not a draft expert, but if any of those 6 is more field ready than the other, i'd say we should target him.

This draft is very unpredictable this year... and no one has a grip on how it will turn out...

I really do not see us taking a corner in the first round. In the cover two, you do not need a lock down corner, and will james/ youboty/greer are fully capable of playing effectively in this system opposite terrance mcgee. I do agree however that we do need another solid corner. That, and Ralph Wilson was quoted prior to free agenct, as reported on billsinsider.com, as saying that his main priority was to get a big #2 receiver to play opposite lee evans. We have not done that yet. Also considering , as stated in above post, that this organization is not afraid to "reach" for a needed player that they like, i think we're going receiver at #11 unless we can add another 3rd rounder to move down. I think Devin Thomas is still our guy at 11

I get the feeling that thomas and harvey are the front runners.
hardy and drc are my two favorites.
dorsey wouldn't get past baltimore. they love drafting great defensive players. and he could give them a chance to become a dominant defense again.
I hope we don't touch merling or flowers at 11.
rivers, phillips. or clady could all bpa picks and upset people.

I will take harvey since I believe a WR will fall to us in the second or third.

In general, the #11 pick is one of the best in the draft.
You're most likely going to get a top 10, possibly top 5 player outside of the top 10. They will be cheaper to sign and will make a BIG impact on your team.
With OT's Clady and now Alberts being pushed into the top 10, someone with serious talent could drop.
Players that have little to, or no bearing on the Bills include:
Matt Ryan, Jake Long, Ryan Clady, Darren McFadden, Clady, and possibly Alberts.
That's 6 players right there that the bills don't need and will take up picks.
Now Filling up the other 4 spots:
Chris Long
Vernon Gholston
Glen Dorsey
Sedrick Ellis
Leodis McKlevin
Derrick Harvey
Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie
3 of those guys will be available when we're up. Possibly more if someone reaches. Maybe will get lucky, and New England will take a CB.
Point of all this is, a very good football player will be there at 11.
I hope we don't reach for a WR.

I agree with what you are saying, but the bills have historically "reched" for players more so to fit they're needs, unless there is someone there that they feel is much much to valuable to pass on , and considering the teams needs offensively for another play maker, i'm not so sure that they would risk missing out on devin thomas and opt for either mckelvin, harvey, or rodgers cromarite especially.
