View Full Version : who is happy????

anyone who is happy with this season needs their head examined. In the past 3 season the regression is on. Year 1 game 7 of the ECF. Year 2 Game 5 of the ECF. Year 3 no Playoffs.
we're going backwards people, please realize that.
Now they wanna try and keep their players. Too late, we already lost the guys who might have taken us to the promise land....

agreed... sports is ALL about windows of opportunity... the sabres had that window with drury, briere and campbell... those opportunities do not happen for small market teams very often... mgmt f'd up royal (a year ago we could have locked up all three) and the fans are going to have to pay for it... let see how the bottom line looks with no playoff revenue!!!!!!
one of the truly sad screw up in buffalo sports history; if not the clear cut favorite

Yes there is. Complacency is the perfect word for it.
Its very strange. I dont think I have ever seen a fan base calm and acceptive to the thought of taking giant steps backwards in order to move forwards.
I can understand if thats a person way of coping, but some people almost give out a satisfied vibe because we were challenging for a playoff spot at the end of the year.

Last time I checked, making it to the ECF 2 times in a row isn't regression.
And explain how having 1 bad year is regression. This years problems won't be that hard to fix. If the Sabres bring in a gritty defenseman, a decent backup goalie, and maybe a leader, expect them to be in the playoffs next year.
Also, Pommers, Roy and Hecht made huge steps forward this year.

hahaha.... another thread about feelings.
Did you ever think that maybe, just maybe, some people saw this coming months and months ago, and have expected to miss the playoffs for a while?
The losses we've had over the last 2 offseasons really hurt this team obviously.... some of them were bad decisions by the FO...but some were going to be inevitable if we wanted to keep our younger players down the road.
I'm giving Darcy a chance to see his plan through to next year. IF we miss the playoffs again he'll probably be gone (I believe his contract would be up)
But yeah... alot of us aren't crying, and bitching and moaning because when we looked at the team in oct, nov, and dec they didn't look like a playoff team, they didn't play like a playoff team.
I think watching this year, along with some players (Roy and Poms) stepping into leadership roles and becoming comfoprtable with those rolls, improvement will show early and often next season. I bet they come out with a chip on thier shoulder.
Why does everything need to be a disaster... there are such things as bad years...players don't play to thier potential, get some bad bounces and unlucky breaks.... it really does happen.

I don't know what Sabre fans you're talking to... but I don't know anyone fans who took this season well. You seem to mistake not agreeing with you with complacency. Just because we're not starting histrionic threads declaring that our restricted free agents are leaving and All Is Doom, doesn't mean nobody gives a damn that we took some major steps backwards this year.

I wasn't saying the complacency was a bad thing. I was just saying that I was surprised at how quiet it is that the team didn't make the playoffs. Most markets would have fans wanting to rip this front office to shreds. Radio stations (hosts, not callers) would be screaming, and the newspaper columnists would be livid.
All we have is Bucky Gleason, and that's about it. The rest seem to be going on like business as usual.

Actually, the first time we made it to the ECF, our defense was so depleted by injuries it wasn't even funny. And from then on, we have never had a good defense.

The organization has two options to get things turned around. Replace every single player, or replace the coach. These two facets of the team are not clicking, and like you said, they are headed in the wrong direction.

I'm disappointed that we didn't make the postseason. Everyone is.
But I thought we were gonna miss the playoffs this year before the year started... and I don't even think we have a bad team. I think we have a very talented bunch of skaters.
The disconnect this year, IMO, was lack of leadership and young players in expanded roles on the ice and in the lockerroom
This showed early in the season.. the team played with no heart, they looked lost at times and nobody stepped up. Toward the end of the year we saw more of that from some of our younger guys who we need to provide leadership.
Missing the playoffs this year is the first taste of utter failure for alot of the guys on this team who are expected to be our leaders... Roy, Poms, Miller or Vanek have been secondary options on very good teams for most if not all of there careers... I'm gonna give them a chance to bounce back before I start labeling the team a disaster.

What can we do? You wanna host a strike and walk on City Hall? we have jobs and things to do. I think its safe to say the Range is upset with the Sabres season, but its time to accept our short comings look to the future of this team.

this team is not a disaster. this season was. we lost some potent goal scoring and team leadership. a bunch of guys underacheived, including our once all-star goalie. the front office has continued to neglect the defense, something that baffles almost all fans.
.
having been a Sabres fan for awhile, you weather the bad years and enjoy the good. this was a bad year. BUT, we have a young, very deep and very talented offense. i am going to assume that Miller will return to form next season, and I can only hope our defense will be better next year [it can't get much worse]. so my sadness over missing this year's playoffs is tempered by my hopes for the future.

Very true and 1 million percent agree...And somehow the majority of people buy into the magical smoke that is blown up our asses from management from the logo debacle and personnel disasters or any other issue fans feel need organizational accountability. Somehow the slightest hint or tease of success wipes the underlying issues of the team away.

The only postive in missing the playoffs is Regier will have more time to work a trade for a proven vet. We won't spend on free agents we have to get rid of salery to get a good player. The NHLPA has screwed small maket teams by having gurenteed contracts. You can't cut anyone! The NFL at least allows teams to dump unproductive players the NHL does not. This is the biggest problem! Teams can't unload a player.

The only two options, huh? Funny....Neither one of them is a real option. I suppose you could fire the coach if you really wanted too. But that wouldn't change the rosters short-comings at all. I've never heard of any sports team replacing every single one of its players in one off season. So how the hell is that really an option?
You're unbelievable. 1 season after losing all 3 Captain's from the year prior, missing the playoffs by 4 points, and now it's time to blow it all up. What a terrible out look you have. Clueless.

I doubt he thought that. I know I didn't. But there seems to be a faction on this board who wants the fans to riot or something. If you act at all levelheaded about the situation, and don't freak out and whine and moan and demand everyone's head on a pike, you're somehow a homer that's placating management.

Lindy is totally going to whoop your ass for saying that I'd watch it.
Also, not true at all. Very oversimplified answer to our problems I'm not sure how Lindy is "heading in the wrong direction" what does that even mean we had one bad year and at times he got a ton out of those guys. Some of the players really stepped up this year (and some were overwhelmed like Vanek and Miller, but still def gave their all), but we just didn't have the talent or the veterans to pull it off. Shit happens but it will be a short rebuilding process and what will seem like a quick reset if we keep this talent.
It sucks and nobody is or should be happy but we def had our shot 2 years in a row you cant keep that level of play or skill up. I got it the f'ed the FA thing but thats not Lindy's fault or the players, and shit happens.
Everyone needs to get over this "conspiracy" and this "worst GM/management ever" shit. Name 5-10 pro sports teams that have been as successful as the Sabres in the past 3 years? I couldnt name 5 but I dont watch sports that Buffalo doesn't have a team in (baseball aside). Jeez name 5 Dow Jones Businesses that are doing that well comparatively? They won ESPNs sportsnation poll not 1 year ago today by a long shot. Nobody should be happy and they def made some mistakes but common call me a homer all you want (which I am and am totally proud of it) but you gotta be shittin me.
by the way if those were our options I'd take 1, mainly because I'm scared of Lindy.

Will someone please explain this to me? Sure stats don't tell the whole story, but dammit they have to be worth something.
Miller admittedly didn't have a great year. But did he get worse or was our opinion undeservedly high last year?
The guy played fricking 76 games this year, 20% more ice time than last year, had a slightly lower GAA and one more shutout.
Granted, his SV% went down ever so slightly and he lost 15 more games (including SOL), but why the heck are we saying he "underachieved" when the team scored nearly a goal less a game and the Sabres once again cobbled together a patchwork defense?
Miller had a slightly off year. Next year he'll be back to the slightly above average level that he has always been...hopefully better.
If you think Miller had a bad year, wait until he goes to Detroit and the Sabres are looking for someone to back up Thibault.

So, you're saying that even though the Sabres made it to game 7 of the ECF with over half of the defense injured, they wouldn't have won the Stanley Cup with their defense not depleted? I bet most resonable people would say the Sabres had a very very very good chance at winning the cup 05-06 if their defense wasn't as depleted as it was.
Lol...you were the ONLY person to see that we weren't going to win the cup this year? Maybe its you who needs to get their head checked because other than bernier56, I doubt anyone thought the Sabres were going to win the cup this year.

im not saying their are important, it's just how i feel. i'm just saying im sick and tired of everything this organization does is A-OK to the fans, speak up, have a mind, this organization is going backwards once again and you people are still calling cup... i don't get it.. like i said before im a die hard yankee fan and i continually bash what they do... and they actually spend money. all im saying is have a back bone we're not a sweet as you guys think we are. im ridiculing the fans but im tired of being right for the past 3 years when i have constantly told my friends and the fans we are not winning a cup... i was the only person who saw that in 05-06, 06-07, and again in 07-08,
Why do you care what other fans think? And why are you happy that you were right about the Sabres not being able to win the cup in 3 specific seasons?
Are you on here to brag about being right that the Sabres have fallen short of expectations? Congratulations, you win at being the ultimate pessimist. Your prize is unhappiness, but I guess being right is all that counts?
Look, a lot of the people you're referring to are people that take the good with the bad and enjoy sports. Every real fan has an amount of hope in their team. For some it's elevated and for some it is more realistic.
There is only so much that a fan can do to make a team spend millions more dollars on players in hopes to win a cup. There is nothing you or I can do about it. Showing how upset you are about your team losing/missing the playoffs isn't going to change the Sabres' front office business strategies, unless you stage some sort of boycott of Sabres games, but sorry, not gonna happen. There are enough people to fill the stands that enjoy the game of hockey no matter whether or not their team wins the Stanley Cup.
The fans are a big part of a franchise, but don't get it twisted. You might be a diehard Yankee fan, but if you dropped off the face of the Earth no one involved with that franchise would give a rats ass.

Notice how you 2 agree with every post the other makes? Looking at how many groans you 2 have could give you a hint.
And another thing, we were the highest scoring team for more than 1 day.
I'm sorry maybe 2 days this year. Hey Rocky get used it around man nobody is humble at all I'm tellin you go into the archives and look at some of the posts its hilarious! I see your a yankee fan well I'm surprised nobody called Derek Roy our Jeter yet but I'm sure that'll come.

I totally agree with rockydm post! I see your kind of new to the range rocky get used it the majority of these guys on here go haywire when we win 1 game. Actually go look at some of the previous posts during the year you'll see what I mean. The funniest one was when we were the highest scoring team in hockey for 1 night and someone actually posted it. I think it would of been wise to actually wait a week or 2 then post it.
Holy %&$! Buffm discovered punctuation! Will wonders never cease?

See once shit hits the fan you gotta drag the Bills in this huh? I'm talking about the Sabres not the Bills get a different comeback!
I'm assuming you are responding to me (who knows?). Excuse me for submitting this post to the wrong board. I was not aware that there was a board specifically for combination Bills-Sabres talk.

talking hockey playoffs and football playoffs is apples and oranges...
I did not intend to compare the football and hockey playoffs. You read into that. I was comparing the relative success of the franchises.
if you look at the bills 27 years they have had a .500 record or better and that in Football is that is respectable maybe not enough to make the playoffs
I didn't say respectable. I said remarkable. With the exception of the mid-60's and the late-80's to mid-90's, there is nothing remarkable about the 48 years of that franchise.

I've never been one for being the grammar police, but if the founder of the Writers' Guild of America read your post, he'd probably be turning in his grave (or having an ulcer if he's still alive).

Hey rocky you'll soon find out you can't say anything bad about the Sabres on this forum. Then when they have no rebuttal they go for the grammar.

There's no rebuttal for unfettered pessimism that is worth anybody's time.
Wanna know why? Because unfettered pessimism isn't worth anybody's time.
