PARIS, France (AP) -- Pirates seized control of a French cruise ship Friday off the coast of Somalia, France's Foreign Ministry said.

A ministry official said details about the attack were scarce, and it was not clear how many crew members were on board the ship or if there were any passengers.

The ship is in the high seas in the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Somalia in the Indian Ocean.

The official declined to identify the vessel or its owner.

The ministry has set up a crisis center to deal with the situation, said the official, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

Pirates seized more than two dozen ships off the Somali coast last year.

The U.S. Navy has led international patrols to try to combat piracy in the region. Last year, the guided missile destroyer USS Porter opened fire to destroy pirate skiffs tied to a Japanese tanker.

Wracked by more than a decade of violence and anarchy, Somalia does not have its own navy and a transitional government formed in 2004 with U.N. help has struggled to assert control.

The International Maritime Bureau, which tracks piracy, said in its annual report earlier this year that global pirate attacks rose by 10 percent in 2007, marking the first increase in three years.

It must be Captain Jack Sparrow.

Only he could get away with this.

can you imagine getting attacked by a us destroyer

i dont care how rich the pirates are their vessels would be ripped to shards

unfortunately theres probably too few destroyers to dissuade the pirates

Piracy is a big problem in the South China Sea too.

Used to be a big issue about 10 years or so ago in the caribbean. Drug runners.

First the news carrier making the original issue should not of labled it a "cruise ship" as its more a very large sailing yacht. Plus who ever owns this vessel should of at least trained one of the 35 crew members to fire a gun. Oh wait, they're French, theyr'e heritage is to surrender so never mind on self-defense.
It amazes me that it is known that piracy happens quite a bit in this part of the world, yet some wealthy ya-hoos take a yacht there that can be boarded by machette wielding pirates from motorboats and doesnt take a friggin gun. Dumb asses.

True FN. But I've read about them stealing whole cargo ships complete with security.

How messed up is that in the 21st century?

It is amazing Pete, but then you would think that shipping COs would send armed escorts along with these vessels. At the very least, mount a couple 60 Cal's on those boats and the minute those idiots pull up in their outboards, you tear them to shreds, and that bullshit wont happen anymore.

Especially when the crews and/or owners usually get their throats slit and their bodies tossed overboard for the sharks to eat.

No witnesses. No bodies. That's scary.

60 cal? ;)

Ok well maybe no a 60 Cal. How about some 25mm, 40mm or 105mm miniguns? They have them loaded on some of the EC-130 Gun ships. Rip them boats to shreds before those "Pirates" can get onboard. Give the deckhands M-16s or something, hell, a stick would be better than nothing.
