I've been trying to learn for about a year now and have really begun to enjoy it (I have my callouses now). I've been self taught with tab but I can read music and now I want to take lessons and clean up my general sloppiness in technique and learn some theory.

My biggest influence for picking up a guitar has been Ray Lamontagne...check him out on YouTube. He is something else...not necessarily the most skilled player but just a heart on his sleeve artist who had a real f'd up time to get where he is at.

I currently have a Martin DM, an Ibanez Artwood AW120ECE for whenever I get good enough to plug it in, and a Yamaha fg-75 parlor type guitar to travel with.

So if you play, what kind of acoustic do you have and who are your favorite artists? And do you have any favorite online or personal tools to help polish your skills?

Be sure to post a pic of your favorite axe if you like!

Self taught - I've been playing electric for close to 20 years...here's my axe - A Gibson Les Paul Wine Red Studio Edition:

Started out playing Metallica and Pantera...then got into grunge and punk rock.

Played in local hardcore/punk rock bands through most of the 90s and early 2000s.

I started playing the acoustic guitar about two years ago...I love the instrument.
I purchased a Taylor 310ce Dreadnaught Cutaway last year:

I've learned and have been playing a lot of Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds tunes, Alkaline Trio, James Taylor, America, Jim Croce, Crosby Stills Nash and Young...

...but I really enjoy writing music currently...that is where I really get the most out of music...

Play with a click track or better yet...a free online drum machine - play along with different tempos.

This was the biggest help when I first started playing - anyone can strum chords...sense of timing is everything in music.

I write with PC Drummer 5 software...once you wrap your head around it...you can really create anything you hear.

I wish I had the internet when I first started...it took me a long time to figure things out on my own.

I play electic myself, i have a black fender american deluxe telecaster, its great.

My effects pedal has a built in drum machine, so it really helps a lot when you're getting going. I'm more of an alt-rock fan so i'll play stuff like that.

I got my first guitar when I was 12 years old for Christmas.

I took lessons for about 5 months, then decided I'd try to teach myself. I can read some sheet music and tabs, but really I would just look at what my brother would do and copy him. Now what helps me learn new songs is Youtube, believe it or not. There's some pretty decent tutorials on there. I really enjoy playing Dave Matthews of course, Goo Goo Dolls, 311, John Lennon and the Beatles. And I know some random songs from The Fray, Coldplay, Plain White T's and OAR.

I certainly wouldn't consider myself a "guitar player" though. I'm not all that great at playing, it's just something I dabble around in for fun, I don’t take it too seriously.

A beautiful Les Paul and your Taylor...it's a precision crafted thing of beauty.

I've played one at guitar center and it's a very underated guitar. Feels and plays great!

I've got a used Fender acoustic that my cousin gave to me when I was in about 8th grade. Still plays alright, good enough for my purposes at least. I still pick it up once and a while.
