Contrary to Senator Barack Obama’s claim that he never heard his pastor Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. preach hatred of America, Obama was in the pews last July 22 when the minister blamed the “white arrogance” of America’s Caucasian majority for the world’s suffering, especially the oppression of blacks.

Senator Obama has sought to separate himself from his pastor’s incendiary remarks, issuing a statement Friday rejecting them as “inflammatory and appalling” but failing to renounce Wright himself for his venomous and paranoid denunciations of America.

In his press release, Obama claimed, “The statements that Rev. Wright made that are the cause of this controversy were not statements I personally heard him preach while I sat in the pews of Trinity [United Church of Christ] or heard him utter in private conversation.”

Appearing on cable news shows this past weekend, Obama claimed when he saw recent videos that have Wright making such comments as “God damn America,” he was “shocked.” Obama implied that the reverend had not used such derogatory language in any of the church services Obama attended over the past two decades.

This certainly doesn't put Obama in a very good light. I don't think that it automatically disqualifies Obama from receiving my vote, but if I began to think that Obama actually agrees with Wright, then I have a problem. I'll be watching closely.

Wow! Great find JLB. This is NOT going away. Let's not forget his very affluent wife's recent comment that "For the first time in her life she is proud of America." Landing on the moon and beating the Soviet Union in her lifetime should have at least generated a little pride. Or could it be that she sat in the pews of Reverend Wright's church and sucked this rhetoric up?

Neither Obama nor his wife suffered through the abomination of Jim Crowe. They both attended schools that we a wish our kids could go to and are very wealthy. I do not understand this hatred for America. He will always have his core of America haters but with this stuff playing 24/7 he can't win the general election. The left will blame it on racism, of course, and the divide will grow even further. What a bloody shame.

Hopefully Condee runs in '12 and we all get to see what truly incredible person and asset we have in her. Black and female and no one will care because she will be an incredible and brilliant leader. The left will show their true colors but the right will rally to her flag.

Obama and Hillary are terrible candidates. I hope Hillary does her best to screw things up.

When Obama said that he was never in the pews when Wright said any of his black nationalistic rhetoric I knew it would come back to bite him in the ass. That was too universal a statement for someone who has been going to Wright's church for over 20 years. I am rooting for Obama to win the D nomination to. I want Hillary to be off my airwaves and out of the newspapers as soon as possible. Of course I think McCain is the best choice out of all three candidates. I was hoping Dr Condoleezza Rice ran for President this year but after McCain is done with his 8 years she will be the perfect candidate to be the Republican nominee in 2016.

More lunacy from the "I will label anyone an Anti-American," crowd.

I love the progression of your post. First Obama hates America. Then Obama is responsible for everything his pastor said. Then merc goes on to assume what the pastor said is sedition.

And then Condi Rice (who has yet to broker any treaty and was totally involved in bringing war upon iraq) is "brilliant" because she is black and female.

Here's some news. Condi Rice is a retard who has a lot of blood on her hands.

I'd rather have Elliott Spitzer as a personal mentor than a heartless death dealer like Condi Rice who couldn't give two shits about the lives of foreign peoples.

Condi Rice, Bush, Cheney and even McCain have brought more shame to America than anything a pastor ever said to the people in his pews could ever do with their relentless pursuit of war.

Look at all the pastors across the US who were hungry for, and actively campaigning for war against Iraqis back in 2003. It was truly disgusting.

And now you're trying the guilt by association on Obama because of the political rants of what his pastor said....you're a goofball dude, a real big goofball.

Has anyone in your life ever said the word n igger or chink, or spic?

Why don't you disassociate yourself from them huh Merc, you freaking hypocrite? I want everyone to give me a list of all the people in your lives who have uttered racist words before and I want a written repudiation.

Oh thats right...no one will. And why not? Probably because they are all your friends, colleagues, bosses and family thats why.

You're all the biggest hypocrites ever and its no wonder America is in the shit hole its in right now.

All you idiots try to do is blame each other for the stupidest most insignificant shit, because you guys are stupid insignificant shits and I guess thats what stupid insignificant shits do to their stupid shit hole of a country.

Chimp. What was said about America is pretty damn true. But come on. I'm not gonna try to put words in your mouth. But outside looking in, don't you see the entire political apparatus in Washington fanning the fires of hatred to split the electorate into camps?

Divide and conquer was used by the Egyptians for God's sake. And it'll be used by Obama, Hillary, and McCain to maximal effectiveness. Rich v Poor (while the REAL rich, who you spot on defined in a Crossfire thread, laugh) white v black, immigrant v natural born, dem v rep, liberal v conservative, gay v straight, jew v christian, christian v heathen, men v women, ect....

Surely, without getting all teary eyed at our "banner waving proudly" you can see this intended divisiveness. Both sides use the tactics. That's not to equate the dems with the same level of pure, unadulterated evil as the reps. No, I see them as Rep-light and thus more stealth and insidious.

Rove's blessed candidate v all non-christian, non-white people.

Hillary v black people.

Obama v women.

It's camp mentality at it's worst. If one side makes the honest effort to put down the sword of division, then the other camps will eat them alive. There is no honor in our system anywhere Chimp. It doesn't exist. . We are no different than some developing nations in that respect. We just happen to have, and not spun as complementary, the best, most effective, and most organized spin apparatus' in the world.

There are a few good congressmen and politicians here. The rest are snakes. Most by chance come from the democratic party. The few that I somewhat trust, and with a keen eye, I do based on their actions. And even that is subject to change as I find out more about their actions. Specifically Chris Dodd, Patrick Leahey, Ron Paul, Mike Gavel, Bill Richardson, and a handful of others. Even Henry Waxman went nuts when the exec went into private meetings to discuss the future of SS and excluded congress, who VOTES FOR THE MONEY.

Snakes Chimp. You have them too. Including one particular scumbag running your country right now. You don't think that the Thomson's, Rogers, Desmarais' ect don't have Harper in their back pocket? Keep an eye on your douchebags too or they'll try to turn Canada into a company town. Fortunately for you, you have a more alert populace and less douche's to worry about but the issue is still there.

Ohh. I think Shiva is correct: There is no right-left in America. There is the extreme fascist right, and the right-lite that tosses crumbs to placate while serving their masters albeit at a slower pace. We have 50x the Thomson families and hence 50x the problem.

ROFL. I promised I'd stop ad hominems, but this is just too good not to chime in. I swear I'll never call you guys naughty names again after this post. Promise!

Seriously, though. Oh. My. God. I refuse to believe some of you can be this stupid.

1) C'mon guys, NewsMax said it! It has to be true! :D :D :D :D

(****, that won't fly.... uhhh.... DON'T VOTE FOR DARKIE! Shit!)

2) If you won't vote for Obama because he was present at a sermon where a pastor dared to criticize America, does that make it legitimate for me to not vote for your shitty candidate because he was present at a sermon where a pastor spewed homophobia? Or warmongering?

While Obama strongly repudiates the words of his pastor, I see John McCain is strongly considering a speaking engagement at Bob Jones University. I suppose now I shouldn't even consider voting for him, because Bob Jones is anti-Catholic, was until recently anti-interracial dating, is anti-hand-holding, prohibits DVD/video players, allows only filtered e-mail access, prohibits rap music, and has a 10:25 PM curfew. Going by the logic of you IG-NOR-A-MUS-ES, McCain is guilty by association of desiring all of this absolutist faux-Christian bullshit to become legitimate domestic policy, applicable to all citizens. But I wouldn't say that. Because I'm not an idiot.

3) Unlike you functionally (?) retarded right-wingers on this board I don't think being present in a forum where people say naughty things is a non-starter for receiving one's vote. If that were the case, none of us could ever run for office, because some of the shit that you guys have come up with to smear Democratic political candidates is ****ing ridiculous.

4) I think those of you already committed to voting against your economic-self interest need little other reason not to vote for Obama. Just say "I refuse to vote in a rational, well-reasoned manner", the smart free-thinkers on the board will continue to find you idiotic, and we'll move on to other topics. Don't fan the flames of your cretinism by actually thinking news stories like this should change voting behavior.

Win.

The truth is that Obama did not attend church on July 22.

He was on his way to campaign in Miami.

(Here is some video evidence.) This was before he signed an agreement forbidding himself from campaigning in Florida.

what the hell?

A voter is in the same position as a driver on the interstate in a white out, looking for the off ramp.

This is just making it harder for a conscientious American to make the right choice.

What about the voters who have no idea what the real issues are? My sister doesn't know anything about the candidates and doesn't want to know. And she's an educated school teacher.

People like her are going to get swayed by the bullshit they see on TV rather than the truth about the candidate.

It's no secret that most of us on the range are in the minority. Most of us here actually do a little research before they comment on a candidate.

However, many, when it comes to voting in the general election, will either rely on their long standing association with a party or the main stream media to make their decision for them.

Unfortunately, you got *******s who write shit articles like the one posted here.

Whether its true or not will have zero bearing on my consideration for who I want to be president.

To get back to my metaphor of the driver driving through a whiteout, looking for the exit.

Smart voters need to see through the noise, disregard it and focus on what's important, not trivial shit like this.

Give me a ****ing break.

Like Gibby said earlier, I wish Ron Paul was more widely known and accepted.

C'mon chimpy, you know your boy has his balls in a vise and he only has himself to blame.

Barack chose to join that church back when he was a community organizer looking to run for political office.

Wright was a big plus in local politics but once Obama decided to bust out, he knew he had a problem with what the good Rev Wright was saying, as much as I agree with it.

The big problem is not the supposed offensive rhetoric, the problem is Barack and his wife are ladder climbing Buppies who see no problem in using religion for political support and now have been caught out because of a previous career strategy.

I'm over at the front lines fighting the good fight like a good young healthy soldier is supposed to be doing.

You, on the other hand, like most old men are safely in the rear preaching to the choir. In fact things are so in order here, that you invent drama intended to divide an already left leaning board.

And what better way to do that than to play on the Obama/Hillary race.

In this column, I cite a report that Sen. Obama had attended services at Trinity Church on July 22, 2007. The Obama campaign has provided information showing that Senator Obama did not attend Trinity that day. I regret the error.

Rather, Obama seems to have seen, early in his career, the utility of joining a prominent church that would help him establish political roots in the community in which he lives. Now he sees the utility of distancing himself from that church. Obama’s behavior in dealing with Wright is consistent with that of a politician who often voted “present” in the Illinois State Legislature for the sake of his future political viability.

The sky isn't technically really blue. Otherwise, it would be still be blue when the sun goes down or if there was no sun at all. The sky is in fact, pitch black.

But you already knew that. I just didn't want to veer off tangent.

You seemingly have overlooked the retraction of this statement by the person who put it forth, William Kristol. He, as many do, knows that a large percentage of people will simply miss this point and his deed is done.

I have a neighbor who likes to point out the the second law of thermodynamics states that evolution can't be true. He is unaware that the creationists who put that forward, have since retracted it, but they care little about the deception - it's doing the work of the lord.

The stupid thing about this "controversy" is that what the Rev said was true.

It is does not matter one bit that he is Obama's minister. Get real.

The Gestapo would be proud.

I got to laugh at people like TigerJ who preach and preached in their pews against the evil of "homosexuality" or about "American piety concerning war against Iraq in 2003" or even "condom use" but "watches someone closely" who attended a sermon where a Reverand said some things that are very true about America.

Its a good thing the Bible itself warns against hypocrites on the pulpit. Even the Bible knows the biggest hypocrites on earth are the very same people who claim to be a person of God.

I don't think you have ever been in my church, judging from your knowledge of what I preach about, Chimp. To my recollection, I have never preached a sermon on homosexuality. I know I've never preached on condom use. I haven't even addressed condom use on a message board like the range. And I have never preached a sermon giving any sort of blessing on US involvement in Iraq.

I know I preached a funeral service for a young homosexual who committed suicide. No, I didn't say he was going to hell. I didn't even mention that he committed suicide. Only the family knew that he had done so, and only the family knew he was gay, and there was no point in broadcasting that fact, especially since the family would have been uncomfortable had I done so.

When it comes to what I teach and preach, you are totally ignorant, and when you pass judgement on things of which you are ignorant, you only look foolish.

Here's more on the info that Obama was not present in Chicago when Wright's "God damn America" sermon was being preached.

On the website that had the Obama video, there were some responses including one that suggested Obaama could have attended the church service in Chicago and then flown to Florida. So I decided to do a little more digging. Going to the website of the National Council of LaRaza, I dug around a bit, and found the schedule for that day. It turns out that Obama was scheduled to speak between 1:30 and 3:00 PM. If the church service in Chicago was at a typical 11 AM, it indeed would have been impossible for Obama to get out of the service at noon (worship in the black cultural style usually last a lot longer than an hour anyway) drive to the airport, get clearance to take off in his private jet, fly nonstop to Miami taking at least three hours, and then be driven to the site of the NCLR conference.

I can't verify that Obama's speech took place at the scheduled time, but I have no reason to think it didn't. Here's the link.

TigerJ
March 17th, 2008, 9:41:33 PM
You're right. I didn't even think aout that. So when it was noon in Chicago, it was already 1 PM in Miami. That made it even more impossible for Obama to go to church in Chicago and make a speech that afternoon in Miami.
