I've used PS since its inception. I currently use PS:CS2. Some don't like it but the amount of options and things you can do are absolutely absurd. I have used this program for yrs and yrs and still havent come close to mastering it. By a long shot. It is a very pricy program......unless you know people. Here's the link for PS:CS3 (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/index.html)

I should check on the website I bought my Microsoft office professional from. they have deep discounts and I mean deep for students. I just checked and I can get Adobe's entire creative suite which includes PS:CS3 extended for 599 bucks. My only problem is that I only have 1 gig of ram in my computer and I don't think it will run very well with that little. But if I buy a new computer which I seem to do every couple of years, I will definitely be getting it.

I also use PS:CS2. I'm on the lookout for CS3, tho, now that I've got my new camera.

i don't do much editing, but when I do I also use PS:CS2, fortunately i have it free on my laptop c/o work...
for simple picture editing - croping/resizing/pano creating etc...
I use a free program called irfanview. it's a nice little program with all the bells and whistles you'd need for simple stuff...

I've used irfanview in the past...but right now, I use Microsoft Photo Editor as part of my Office Package for the most part...I don't get too crazy into changing photos after I've taken them

Search for GIMP. Nearly the same as Photoshop, but free.

Photoshop is major overkill for editing personal photos.
GIMP is quick and easy but also more than you need generally. :) Right now I just use digikam. Right-click and edit, and it does most of the normal photo editing stuff itself (probably calling out to many other libraries, but whatever. It's simple).

Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 is a pretty sweet photo editing software. It has a time machine function built in, which will automatically edit your photo back to a specific era of photography. I have that on my computer, along with Picasa, and also Adobe Photoshop Elements 6, and my canon camera came with a pretty nice selection of photo editing software.
