Thats one of the best and realistic 1st round mocks that I've seen yet. P.S. I know it wasn't intentional, but you have Early Doucet going in the first round to TENN and his twin brother going to DEN in Rd. 2. Other than that I really do like the 1st round. The only other thing I can disagree with is that you have Brandon Flowers as the last pick of round 2. If he even lasts until our round 2 pick, it would be rediculous not to take him there. But good job on the mock, I like it!

With the signing yesterday of William James I think the Bills have tipped their hand. Unless something unexpected happens, which it usually does, look for the Bills to use to use their first pick on a WR. I think right now, that it is a 3 man race between Malcolm Kelly, Devin Thomas and Limas Sweed. All three have some significant questions to answer in tew coming weeks before the draft.

Malcolm Kelly reportedly met with the Bills yesterday and is scheduled to finally participate in a workout at Oklahoma's second pro day in early April. Questions about the condition of his knees have surfaced along with questions about a lingering quad muscle injury that kept him out of Oklahoma's Bowl game and caused him to skip both the combine and the 1st pro day.

Devin Thomas exploded onto the scene last year at Michigan State. He has gamebreaking speed and size to turn short passes into long gainers. However, as a JUCO transfer who declared for the draft after his Junior year, his resume before this season is extremely sparse. Mike Mayock, who likes Thomas, also pointed out Thomas has a tendency to drop a number of balls. He seems to lose some concentration and lets balls hit his chest when peeking to make a big play.

Limas Sweed, can answer the questions about the condition of his wrist today at Texas' pro day work-out. If he goes out and shows off his athleticism, size, speed and soft hands, he will likely move to the very top of the Bills board. Sweed is precisely the type of receiver the Bills are looking for opposite Lee Evans. He's a big target who will move the chains and will win most jump balls in the end zone. He also demonstrated enough speed to be a gamebreaker posting a 4.48 at the combine. Our own unscientific war room poll had him winning in a landslide when the question of which WR should the Bills select if they go WR at 11. He also is reported to be the kind of high character player the Bills covet and he showed real toughness going out and practicing Senior Bowl week despite not being near fully recovered from his wrist fracture.

In the 4th round they could turn their attention to the offensive line. John Sullivan is the kind of blue collar, lunch pail prospect that will feel right at home in Buffalo. He's a tenacious blocker who plays with good leverage and gets the most out of his athletic ability and strength. He may never make a pro-bowl, but stick him in the middle and forget about worrying about finding a center again for 10 years. He is intelligent to make all tew line calls, will be a team and if surrounded by larger guards like the Bills have in Dockery and Butler, he could thrive.

In the second round look for the Bills to go offense again and take the best TE left on the board. I project that both Fred Davis and Martellus Bennet will be gone, but the Bills would do well to select Dustin Keller. Keller is great athlete with a non-stop motor. He will be an h-back at the next level and would make a nice pass catching compliment to tew in-line blocking Royal in two TE sets. Keller will be a blitz buster and will be able to turn outlet dump off passes into big gainers.

The Bills could then put some finishing touches on the defense in the 3rd by getting a pass rushing specialist to add to the DE rotation. Chris Ellis may drop because he may not have the bulk to be a 3 down lineman at the next level, but he could thrive in a rotation. He showed the ability to completely take over a game in college, even though he disappeared at times.

In the 5th, the Bills can hope a sleeper corner like Tyvon Branch drops to them. Branch can be an effective corner on a team that is zone based with help over the top. He has great straightline recovery speed and is not afraid to get his shirt dirty in run support. Antwuan Molden is another sleeper corner to look for.

FB is another position the Bills will likely look to fill on day two. Fortunately, this is a pretty deep class at FB. Owen Schmitt is a popular choice in Bills mock drafts, but he may get over drafted. Mike Cox is another tough, lead blocking prospect with some athleticism that the Bills could lock up in tew later rounds.

If JP Losman is moved, the Bills may also address QB on day two. There are a couple of interesting developmental QBs that can be found like Kevin O'Connell and Paul Smith. O'Connell is rising up draft boards and may prove too costly for the Bills. Smith may be a perfect #2. He is an extremely bright and of very high character. He also is an athletic QB with a decent, not great arm. He may never develop into a number 1, but he could have a Frank Reich type long career in the NFL. I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up as a head coach some day.

The Bills will round out the draft with an eye towards special teams and depth in tew secondary. SU grad Joe Fields would be a good fit in that role.

Thanks for catching the Doucet and Otah mistakes. I corrected it. I have Otah going to KC at the top of the second. I switched Minningham for Doucet to the Broncos and projected Jordy Nelson to Tampa.

I had Flowers going to the Bills in my draft version of my mock draft, before yesterday's signing of William James. I agree he would be difficult to pass on, but I just feel the need to add playmakers to the offense has to be the top priority now.

Sorry Admarc... I love ya but I aint feeling the Fins picks at all...

Cant miss with Chris Long... but we have way too many other needs to invest another high pick in a QB.

And you have us drafting 3 LBs in our first 4 picks. I cant see that happening either.

When doing the Fins picks... think NT, TE, CB, OT/OG.

Hope that helps... ;)

He was projected much higher before getting injured this year. Cottam, also obviously had durability issues, but could be the steal of the draft if he can stay on the field.

This is a great mock. It is exactly how I believe the Bills should go about it. Add two offensive playmakers on day one, and then build the defense and OL depth on day 2. Out of all those day 2 picks, I'm sure we can get a nickel/dime DB, a situaional pass rusher, and and depth at OL.

Also, as of right now, I like Sweed the best out of the 3 guys you named.

If the wrist is healed, he shoots to the top. Kelly also has a chance to move up to the top if he able to run well at his pro day workout and his knees check out in the team physical when he visists 1 BD. I actually saw reports he was visiting yesterday but there are never any confirmations from the team on rookie visists.

Thomas can only rise to the top spot if the other two faulter or fail their medical exams.

admarc I love this draft as far as the Bills are concerned. Sweed is the prototype for what I think the Bills need opposite of Evans, I agree that they tipped their hand in the first as far as the signing of James. I would think that he is about as good of a fit as they could find at this point, unless Kelly proved to have no health concerns in the April workout, even if that is the case I would like Sweed over Kelly. The Keller and Ellis picks are right on the money. Not that familiar with Branch, Sullivan would be a nice addition to the interior, but I see more need for depth at OT, than the interior of the line. I am really high on Paul Smith, he has Reich-like qualities.

Very good work.

What?!? You dont think Beck is the 2nd coming of Marino???? Are you crazy?!?!?

lol...

Of course QB is a huge need for us. However, I dont think ANY rookie QB is going to be able to fill that hole. Not with such a disaster around him. I want to have a good offensive line with good weapons before I bring in a rookie. I think right now, bringing in a rookie would guarentee him to fail with the situation we have.

And then, we have wasted another pick on a QB... and we are in the same position we are in this year, or last year, or the year before that.

Actually, I agree that you don't want to throw a QB to teh wolves as a rookie. I wouldn't give up on Beck yet, but I think it would be wise to hedge your bet and have a developmental guy waiting in the wings just in case. Flacco is at least a year away from being ready to step on the field, that's why you draft a QB now while your starting the re-building process.

A well-thought-out draft. Kudos to Admarc.

I do not particularly like the draft (guess I'm in the minority!), but it could really go
down like that for the Bills - very realistic.

My concerns are taking never-will-be-fulltime-starters in rounds 2 & 3. I think Keller may be a dangerous pass-catching weapon and bring the kind of attitude the Bills desire, but he is not big enough - nor a good enough blocker to be a full-time in-line TE. Chris Ellis is always going to be a part-time player in a 4-3 unless he can get much bigger.

My issue is that (I think) 2nd and 3rd round picks need to have at least the potential to be full time starters. I believe that if you start getting too many specialists, particularly with high picks, then you can't be very successful. So, the projection is a 2nd rounder on someone who plays only on passing downs and a 3rd rounder who plays only on passing downs and is the 4th DE (at best) - at least that is the way I see it.

For the record, I don't particularly like any of the TEs and it may be that I have to get current and realize that there really aren't all-around TEs anymore. I may also have to come to grips with pass rushing specialists being worthy of 3rd round picks, but I don't think Ellis is really that dynamic of a pass rusher anyway.

Don't interpret this as a diss, because I don't have a better mock...

Just my $.02 worth...

Just my $.02 worth...nice post. I actually agree with most of your points and would prefer Martellus Bennet at TE and a 3 down DE but I think the Bills really do buy into the rotational and specialist philosophy.
That is essentially the way this team has been built.

The TE and FB they select this draft will really go a long way to finally defining the offense. If they select an in line TE like Bennet with a power lead blocking FB like Schmitt, then they will be a smash mouth power running team. If they go with an h-back like Fred Davis or Keller, than they will go with two TE sets, use the short passing game and try to open up running lanes by spreading defenses out.

As far as finding a 3 down DE, they probably have to use their 1st pick to do that. In my last mock that is exactly what I had them doing.

Its a real interesting debate that I am curious to see play itself out I have gone with both approaches in my mocks and think both can be successful if done properly.

Hope that helps... ;)

yeah, who needs a QB, they are over rated anyway, John Beck looked good enough last year to carry this team.

Everyone needs a QB...

My point was, I dont even think we are at a stage where bringing in a good QB has much of an effect. This team is so depleated of talent everywhere else...

And it has nothing to do with Beck...

I understand the debate. I think that unless you can essentially pay your blocking TE and your receiving TE 1/2 of what a starting "all-around" TE makes, the specialist approach is a problem. If you have to pay both of your "rotational" players close to starter money at every position, a team will have financial and cap problems.

To me, the other drawback of the specialist approach is that it becomes easier for your opponent to figure out what you are going to do on a given down based on the personnel you have on the field at the time. For example, if the Bills were to draft Keller and use him primarily on pass plays, that would tip the defense off when he was in the game (or vice-versa when Royal was in the game). I understand that teams do this all the time with different personnel packages in the game anyway, but still I think if you can find a good all-around TE, your offense can be much less predictable. The trouble is finding a good all-around TE....

One other thought, is it really better to look at a receiving only TE than it would be to take an extra WR and put them on the field? I think if you view Keller in the context of another WR only, then he isn't that special. He is definately a lot faster than many true TEs, but if the option were him and say someone like Early Doucett or James Hardy that might be available at the same point, I might just say forget TE and put 3 or 4 WRs on the field.

I am less concerned with the rotational philosophy at DL as I can buy that the DL guys do expend more energy than any other players on the field with pass rushing and with fighting 330lb OL on run plays. I am sure that wears you down and DL tend to be on the larger side anyway.

The h-back position was designed as a blitz buster, so the argument that it tips your hand isn't that strong because it is a reactive position to a certain extent. If a blitz comes from an inside linebacker, the h-back runs a route to that spot. If it does cause a defense to adjust to stop it, you really have already won because that means they are afraid to blitz.

His skill set is slightly different than a pure WR because he often has to fight through traffic to get to the spot and the key to being a good h-back is run after catch ability. So, while they may not be asked to block a DE in line, the do need to be physical, will be asked to pop a blitzing safety or lb to slow them down before releasing, etc.

The h-back is often matched up with a lb or ss in coverage, so being more physical is important. So while their role is primarily to catch the ball and not block, the routes they run and who they match up against make their role different than a WRs.

Just a question.

Why is it that you think signing a 3rd CB tips their hand that they won't draft a CB early?

James was not brought in to start. He was brought in for depth. If the Bills feels that they can find a better CB than Greer (and move him to nickel) then they could still be drafting a CB.

We only had 3 CBs on our roster, signing 1 mediocre one doesn't mean we aren't going to add a better one later.

Anyone think there's a possibility the Bills will try to go with value at 11 and then trade back up to get a guy like Sweed? I'm not sure where he's at right now on most big boards but i feel like it wouldn't be a terrible move to do something like what we did with Whitner and McCargo. Of course, moving into the middle first is never too easy of a thing to do.

I'd love to land a guy like Harvey AND the WR we covet most in this draft but that's asking for an awful lot.

Yes, I think that could very well happen. It will likely cost the Bills their remaining 3rd round pick to move up from their 2nd round pick to get a WR, though.

I like the approach, but I am not all that juiced on Harvey. I would be happy with who they think is the best player available at 11 (even happier if they can find a trade partner to trade down with).

DE is usually a position teams reach for a bit, especially when your talking about a pass rusher. From your positional rankings there looks to be about 6 or so, do you really think Ellis is going to make it to the 3rd rd?

Right. And Dustin Keller is a STAR H-Back waiting to happen. Not saying Buffalo should necessarily draft him. Just saying in the right system he could be one hell of an H-Back.

The contract James signed is reported to be for #2 corner money. Even if he is the #3 corner, I don't think the Bills will feel any urgency at the position with Greer and McGee as starters and Youboty being given one last opportunity to contribute. I do still expect the Bills to add a corner in the draft and they may still add Carr through Free Agency. Of course if the top corner left on their board is rated much higher than the WR, TE or DE at that point, they still could go corner, but in my mock scenario DRC and Jenkins are gone.

So, even though James may not be a pro-bowl corner, he adds experience at the position. He really is a pretty good corner when healthy, but that has been his biggest problem. Corner is still a need, but after this signing IMHO, it drops down well below WR and slightly behind finding an impact TE and pass rushing DE.

From your positional rankings there looks to be about 6 or so, do you really think Ellis is going to make it to the 3rd rd? Ellis is bit undersized and doesn't look like he'll be highly coveted as a LB for the 3-4 teams because he is not real fluid in the hips, so that will limit the number of teams interested. It's a pretty deep draft for DE's so I think he could drop to the 3rd but I may be being a little too optimistic. He could go ahead of Robertson but I also like Robertson. So if Ellis is gone, that would be a good option.

Ok, at least I had 1 mock draft with one Bill projected correctly. Ellis to the Bills in the 3rd is one of my favorite picks of the draft for the Bills.
