Matt McGuire's 2008 NFL Pre-Draft Analysis - Miami Dolphins (http://walterfootball.com/forum/../mattpredraftmia.php)
I'm also going on "The Dolphins Make Me Cry" radio station today at 8:00 ET on the Fins Radio Network (http://www.blogtalkradio.com/finsradio).
Stroke (the host of the show) says we are going to discuss the Dolphins draft, the prototype LT (or other positions), teams that want to trade up/down in the first round, and much much more!!!
Going to be a great show, this is my debut so I'm psyched. As far as the trades are concerned (you all know how I feel about the Fins draft) it is just something you haven't heard before. Tune in at 8:00 ET!!!!!

Jake Long: When I think of a tackle that should be taken with the first pick in the draft, I point to the prototypes. Athletically, Joe Thomas was amazing. Orlando Pace was amazing. Long will not be an elite left tackle in the NFL. He simply lacks the great quickness and fluid hips to play the position. Thomas ran a 4.92 at the combine. Long ran a 5.17. His feet weren't as quick in drills as Thomas' (which I consider to be the prototype athletically for the position) and while he has an outstanding wingspan and strength, it simply takes more than that to be an elite left tackle. You don't draft a player No. 1 unless he can be an elite player at the position. Long can be an elite right tackle, but his athletic ability is lacking to be taken No. 1.
I'm with you on Chris Long being the favorite for the #1 pick at that spot. But I have Jake Long #2 right now. (Gholston #3)
And I agree with you in terms of having a couple of questions about JLong being able to be an elite LT in terms of his quickness. In fact, I wouldnt even want to play him at LT if we drafted him. Not because I dont think he could play at a very high level there, but because I feel his potential at RT is limitless.
I know it may be against the grain in terms of tradition... when drafting a RT that high... because people value that LT more than the RT. Now, I would agree that I value the LT more than the RT, but I still value the RT very highly. RTs these days do handle some pretty premier pass rushers... just look at the LDEs Peppers, Strahan, and Super Mario... plus all the pass rushing 3-4 OLBs that are moving around the defense. When you see what defenses are now doing with guys like Merriman and Jason Taylor, moving them all over, you need guys to be able to pass block on both edges.
And lets not kid ourselves, JLong is a damn good pass blocker. Maybe just not absolutly elite in terms of ideal quickness... but I think he could definitely do well at LT with the pass blocking skills he has.
But its how much of a mauller this guy is that makes me LOVE him at RT. I mean, the kid is a monster, and I honestly believe he will be an All Pro at RT.
And I dont care what anyone says... getting a player that looks to be an All Pro at a pretty important position is worth the #1 pick hands down. And with the way defenses are evolving, more and more premier pass rushers are coming from the strong side...

I think they will draft Gholston.
I like him a lot too...
I have him ranked #3...
I think he has the most upside... but also the most bustability. I feel that the Long's are safer picks... but if Gholston pans out, he will be a monster...

Read "Game of Shadows". NFL players have almost zero chance of getting caught for steroids. The ones that do get caught are either complete idiots or they really did take a tainted supplement like they said.
The NFL drug program is a farce. Gholston will be fine for years.

Ryan imo is going to be a stud and i hope the dolphins pass on him.
Long be a solid pick for sure but how will be do against NFL double teams , chip blocks, and play action in the pros. It will take him time just as it will every one else to adjust.
