WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The House of Representatives voted Friday to back the Democratic-sponsored revisions to federal surveillance laws.

The House voted Friday to back a revision to the Democratic-sponsored FISA bill.

The vote was 213-197 in favor of a revision of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act bill that was supported by the Democratic leadership.

One member voted present.

The vote came after a secret session Thursday night in the House. It was the first time the House has met in secret since 1983.

The Democratic plan would allow telecommunications companies to be sued for their role in the administration's much-disputed warrantless surveillance program.

The bill now goes to the Senate, but both the Senate and President Bush have made it clear that they will not support the bill without an immunity provision.

Smoke and mirrors. Nothing will happen. It'll get press, drag out, and the dems will lose in the Senate. They'd better. This "partisan" crap looks great to the masses. "We're trying folks, but the mean republicans (our golf partners) just keep blocking it. So bear with us for another 30 years, we'll get this law off the books.

So I'm just curious Pete, do you get actively involved in any of this? I mean have you called any of your reps, or any representatives in the house involved in this fight?
Any e-mails, letters?

And don't get all defensive on me, its a legitimate question. Too many people just bitch and moan and do nothing and blame everything on the politicians. Now I'm not saying thats you, jus sayin.

Nothing is really going to change unless we the people make it happen from the bottom up. The right wing and the religious-political crazies can wield some power because they are a very effective and vocal minority.Christ!! they got congress to call a special session to invade a families very personal and private matter in the Terri Schiavo case.

The reason this FISA and telecom immunity fight has even been protracted this long is because the progressive/dem community has been bombarding the house with calls and letters and e-mails. I too fear that eventually the house will cave on this issue, but I also believe that the more noise we make the less the chances of that happening are.

Absolutely Mik. Debbie Wassermann Shultz and Mel Martinez. Mel's a phony and Debbie's a go-along.

It's embarrassing. I've posted emails from them on this site. Personally you and I both know it's a staffer with a canned answer but hell, better than bitching and doing nothing.

I'm active in other areas. Member of Architects & Engineers For 9/11 Truth, ~ which, according to some, makes me a domestic terrorist, what a friggin' joke ~ financial supporter of Amnesty International, and the ACLU.

Ohh. I gotta respect the fact that you're not a sit-on-your-ass and bitch person.

One voice is one voice. A million voices means they get fearful of being caught having to rig the computerized vote. So I think it helps.
