I'm heading up there with a buddy in a couple weeks and was just wondering what I should be looking out for?

There's a lot of really beautiful architecture there. But what you should be looking out for is really rude French-Canadians. Most of the people in Montreal (that I've met at least) hate Americans, and they will not help you at all. When I was there, almost everyone I went up to, to ask for directions or something, gave me a dirty look, cursed in French, and walked away.... I don't really like the people in Montreal. The people in Quebec City are much nicer.
Have fun!

I've been to Montreal a couple of times(once with my brother and then-fiancee,now wife-and then a few years later on my own while doing a baseball tour that began in Vermont and ended in Ottawa).
They do have a casino up there-using a couple of the buildings on the old Expo 67 grounds, and with more games that the casinos here have(just don't wear your hats going in there...it's a no-no,as well as alcohol beverages).
The Notre Dame de Montreal basilica has a nightly sound and light show.
One must do(which, alas,I never got the chance to do)is go to Schwartz's for the infamous "smoked meat" sandwich.
http://www.tourism-montreal.org/ should give you all the info you need.

I was there a number of years ago and it was really, really COLD (and I was there in early November). Yeah, I'm from Buffalo and I thought it was cold there. Seriously, dress warmly.
It's true, the French-Canadians up there aren't very nice. They will go out of their way to speak French if they know you can't. They pretend they don't speak English. They are so rude, they will ignore you until you just become ugly if you are in a store -- they will help everyone around you and act like they can't help you -- even if it means loss of a sale. They just don't give a damn.
That said, there are some fantastic clothing deals up there.
There is a hotel called Hotel St. Denis and there is a tiny restaurant in there that had the best french onion soup. There is a german beer garten restaurant there that is pretty cool, but I don't remember the name of it. I believe it's on the same street as the Hotel I mentioned.
There was a transit strike when we went, so we didn't get to see as much as we would have liked, but it was a cool place to visit.

I used to travel to and work in Montreal every other week and was never ignored, and BTW, I know only @ 20-25 words of French (enough to get me laid).
I'll tell you what, though if you show up sporting a ball cap and sabres/bills zubaz, then you deserve to be ignored...Montreal is all about the style.
The best bar strip for Anglos is Crescent Street (http://www.crescentmontreal.com/en_crescent_merchants_pubs_clubs_bars.htm), just remember the above advice, don't show up dressed like a hick, as that's definitely a high-end area. Show up there how you'd show up at a Chippewa bar and you'll be fine.
If you're looking for a bit more downscale area, i.e. more of a student area, then hit the Latin Quarter (http://www.quartierlatin.ca/en/index.html), that's where the Just for Laughs festival is centred around in the summer. Lots of fun to be had there. That Hotel St Denis Sabre Girl mentions is located on the south end of the Latin Quarter, just remember that it's on the east side of 'The Main' (St. Laurent) so that means that it is in the more French side of town. If a French experience freaks you out, then stay and play on the west side of downtown.
I second CK's motion to go to Schwartz's (http://www.schwartzsdeli.com/) for lunch. That is a must. Get a smoked meat sandwich and cheesecake for dessert and you won't have to eat for at least a day after that. Breakfast at any of the Jewish places along St Urbain is a must-stop for me, also...Montreal bagels are da bomb.
If you're looking for high-end dining, then Gibby's (http://www.gibbys.com/) is awesome.
If you're looking for a good, solid, middle-price meal, then St Huberts (http://www.st-hubert.com/en/) are pretty good...Quebec's answer to Swiss Chalet.
If you're traveling with the boys, no girlfriend with you, then take Shiva's advice and hit the peeler bars. Actually, even if you are traveling with the girlfriend, then take her.
Oh, I almost forgot. The old stalwart if you just want to drink beer and have a good time is the Peel Pub (http://english.montrealplus.ca/bars_restaurants/peel_pub/448029) I've never had anyone say they've had anything but a good time there.

Thanks guys, keep em coming if anyone else has any info. One thing I was wondering about as I keep hearing about how rude they treat Americans there, are the women going to be that snotty or will they engage in conversations with you at the bars? From everybody else I've talked to I hear they are pretty easy :wooter:

Montreal made a ass out of themselves with the booing of american kids playing hockey there. One of the local hockey players was so embarressed, he started a freindship games with the americans to show that not all quebecers are a-holes.

It was a really good time, the city itself was beautiful as for fun we didn't get to hit any skin bars(I know, I know:thdown1:), but we did go out and party at a nightclub that was nicer than anything I've ever seen in Buffalo, we spent some time at a bar called Peel Pub which not only had excellent food but was a great place to watch some Canadians games, and went to the Casino which once again was a lot nicer than the ones around here. We also got snowed in, I was there that weekend where there was a terrible snowstorm(both home and over there). I also loved the underground shopping center they have there that connects right to their main 4 story mall. Like I said great time, it was just one of those things where you wish you could have a couple extra days/nights to get everything in you wanted to do though.

I heard the women are easy up there and they're pissed cause the Expos moved that's probably why they don't like americans :)
