how come the canadian hockey team and to a lesser extent the u.s team don't care about the the world championships. jagr risked half his nhl contract to play for his country, bondra, pallfy, naslund all rushed over there. but not one canadian of superior skill bit at the opportunity, are canadians just not very patriotic???

It's not that. It's the opposite. European players have far more loyalty to their country than the NHL while the N. American players all know thatm it's not a true representation of a country's hockey talent. It's like when Michael opted not to do the slam contest so other players could have a chance to do it. That's my theory.
Plus, the Canadian and American players are banged up more that the Europeans becuase the Europeans play gutless in the NHL.

gutless??? lol. i don't buy into that theory!! palffy and naslund just came off grueling series and were on the next flight over. why not jovo, gagne, roenick??

bduff it's disappointing.. I know.. I like what Giguere said after the game about those who didn't want to come play to represent their country.. but anyway if Canada had their real team with their stars.. they would have probably won.. it's not that big of a deal.. didn't you say that nobody cared about the Championships anyway? so why are you bringing it up?

thats why nobody cares because nobody goes to play!!! i would care if we had a real team representing us. no way canada could beat the czechs

Whatever.. you sound like a fair weather fan to me...
I always care because it is CANADA regardless of which players are there... I love watching the Juniors too... and yeah Canada can beat the Czechs....

Bduff-Canadians aren't very patriotic, which is a good thing. If Canada would have lost in the Olympics people would be disappointed but not they would get over it quickly because of the nature of Canadians.

if we had lost to the states in the olympics the majority of the country would still be thrwoing stuff in their basement right now
May 8th, 2002, 4:52:17 PM
We'd STILL be throwing things in our basements? But it was almost three months ago.

Duff-You're blowing it way into proportion if Canada would have lost there would have been some anger, but after a week or so it would be done with.

Nobody cares about the World Championships because
a) It's in a time zone that's 7 hrs different than us, so you have to be real hardcore to watch live
b) It's never been played (at least in recent memory) in North America, so is seen as "that European thing"
c) It competes directly with the NHL playoffs for audience
d) Shootouts. What the hell is this Man U vs Arsenal? If I wanted to watch the footy, I'd turn on channel 47
e) North American have a 9-consonant attention span for players names i.e. Joe Sakic = good, Vladimarinsky Pissmyenkochev = bad

Slovakia eliminated Canada in the quarterfinals 3-2.
Bondra got 2 goals & Satan 1.
Slovakia's cool, A little known fact; they passed a law during the Great Depression, severly limiting consonant usage in surnames. That law still stands today.
(My Grandfather was from Slovakia...he left for Canada during the 1932 consonant purges)
