If the Carolina Hurricanes hope to make the playoffs, they will have to do so without their captain.
General Manager Jim Rutherford announced that the team will be without Rod Brind'Amour for four to six months after he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee during the first period of Thursday night's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Following the game the Hurricanes announced that Brind'Amour would undergo reconstructive knee surgery.
Brind'Amour, who entered with a team-leading 51 points, was sandwiched by the Penguins' Nathan Smith and Georges Laraque near the boards at the centre line just 1 1/2 minutes into the game. He fell to the ice, skated to the bench and then grimaced as he was taken into the dressing room.
Brind'Amour has 19 goals and 32 assists for the Hurricanes, who entered the game tied with Atlanta and Washington atop the Southeast Division.
Huge Blow to Carolina and their hopes at a playoff run. Rod can be a nasty character, but plays hard and gets results. This may spur Carolina into the trade arena too.

We were talking about that last night in the shoutbox. I'd like to see if the Hurricanes would take a flyer on Afinogenov, despite the fact that he's hurt.
Afinogenov and Gerbe for Cole. I'm in.
As far as Rutherford to Toronto, sure, whatever.

No, don't get rid of Gerbe.

You have to give to get. And this team is small enough as it is, and gets knocked around enough as it is. I'm not saying he isn't good, but 5'5" scares me. That's not "small"; that's a midget.
Does the name Steve Kariya ring a bell to anyone?

Theo Fleury is 5-6. Brian Gionta is 5-7. Marty St. Louis is listed at 5-10, but if you've ever seen him in person, you know he's much closer to 5-7.
Regardless, now on my trade-deadline big board are Erik Cole, Ray Whitney, Bret Hedican and Glen Wesley. I have no clue if any are on the block, but Carolina is done. No Brind'Amour, Stillman, Commodore or Williams. Season over.

Sorry, but to me, Erik Cole isn't worth Max and Gerbe. That's too much.

Living down here in Carolina, they have talked a lot about what the Hurricanes should do now that Brind'Amour is out. If they firesale, then they will move the likes of Cole. Cole, is not the same player as he once was... he shows flashes, but continues to disapoint. Not sure we would want that on our team.

There is a remarkable difference between 5-5 and 5-6 or 5-7? Not really. They all ride kittens to their respective arenas, that's for sure.

Erik Cole is also a dick that I simply don't want in a Sabres uniform, he's also as much if not more of an injury liability than Max. Andrew Ladd I'd think about, but they won't be giving him up. Their old defense could be had for draft picks, but I don't think I want it.

Change of atmosphere can do a player wonders...

Doesn't Cole seem like your typical Darcy Regier reclamation project? He always seems to pick up players who are either struggling in their setting or don't fit in, and they've regularly entered Buffalo and been fantastic. We've seen it countless times. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if two things happen: A. Cole comes here; B. He thrives.

I can't say I'm really feeling pity for the guy...you know, like on a human level.

Seriously? To me, that's one of the more unrealistic trade proposals yet. I can't imagine Rutherford doing that in a thousand years. If he's shopping Cole, there'll be a lot better offers than an injured 1 dimensional forward and a 5'5 prospect.

I know you guys are down on his size, but Gerbe will be the Spud Webb of the NHL.

He's got an angry streak in him...and I dig that.

Whitney signed an multi-year deal last summer, so I would doubt it. Cole has one more year but he's no longer consistently the threat he once was (yet he would be a perfect fit for the Sabres style of play). I wouldn't be surprised if Hedican retires after this year.
Having already traded for an injured player in Eaves, I can't see Rutherford doing that again with Brind'amour hurt too.
Their season might be over, but as long as the Southeast division continues to stay down, they have a chance for the 3rd seed in the playoffs.
Given the number of Canes players Pens have injured over the last 3 years, I think they have officially displaced the Sabres as the fans' most hated team.
