Mckenzie updated his blog. Mostly he talked about Prospal likely being moved by T-Bay. Then he mentioned this:

A pair of NHL general managers are facing some very difficult decisions. Only the names have been changed.

Atlanta GM Don Waddell has to deal with the Marian Hossa situation.

Buffalo GM Darcy Regier has to deal with the Brian Campbell situation.

And the situations are close to identical.

Both GMs are holding out hope, albeit faint, of signing those players before the trade deadline on Feb. 26 or even the July 1 date when they both are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents.

But, while neither can or will say this publicly, the sense in Atlanta and Buffalo is both players are not going to sign before the trade deadline.

Regier met with Campbell's agent Larry Kelly in Ottawa on Tuesday and while everyone is embracing the lines of communication are open party line, that is not to be confused with real progress on a new deal. Same sort of deal in Atlanta, where Waddell has had enough conversation with Hossa's agent Ritch Winter to know no one should be holding his breath waiting for Hossa to re-up with the Thrashers.

So it would be fair to say Waddell and Regier will be much more aggressive in ascertaining their value in the next 13 days leading up to the trade deadline.

Waddell and Regier need to get a very clear picture of exactly what Hossa and Campbell would fetch in a trade.

Then they need to weigh the return against what moving those key players would do to their teams for the balance of this season and perhaps the playoffs.

Atlanta is in a tight battle within the Southeast Division for the third seed overall in the Eastern Conference.

Buffalo has climbed into the top eight in the East and would love nothing more than to stay there.

But these are not the Sabres of last season, when they were co-favorites with Ottawa to emerge from the East. And as much as the Thrashers would like to replicate last year's playoff appearance, there is probably a greater sense of building something over the next few years in Atlanta than a singular focus on this post-season.

In other words, the likelihood of both Hossa and Campbell being traded before the deadline has become extremely high.

Waddell and Regier will keep trying to sign them; they will keep talking to other teams; they will keep watching the NHL standings and where they fit in. But when push comes to shove on or before Feb. 26, the overriding sense is that the Thrashers and Sabres aren't going to put themselves in a position to see Hossa and Campbell skate off into the unrestricted free agency sunset without getting something in return.

Whichever way it goes, the GMs in question face some very tough decisions

All this after Tuesday's talks and especially Phaneuf's signing.

I'm just tired of the story being the same. :)

Trade him, pay him, whatever. Just DO something already!

I say if you can't sign him to 5.5 mil a year or less...trade him and let's move on with our lives. After what Lundqvist received I think it'll be hard to keep Miller, Campbell, AND Vanek with salaries all over 5 mil a year.

Miller is clearly the most valuable player on this team, thus there no room to overpay Campbell. Send him out West for a young roster defenseman, a pick, and a prospect forward.

I usually really respect McKenzie's opinions, but I've got to disagree this time.

He should know more than anyone that it has nothing to do with finishing 1st...or being picked to win it all before the season (despite the fact that Anaheim did win it)

Ottawa is ramping down lately, and the Sabres are ramping up. Does this guarantee they go deep in the playoffs? No. But it makes trading Campbell much more difficult to evaluate and move.

I still think that if he doesn't sign a deal by Feb. 26, we'll move him, and for good reason. If he or his agent think they can bluff on the Sabres, and that we'll take that bluff and continue negotiations after the season, they have another thing coming.

I just hope for Campbell's sake that if he likes it here, and wants to help us in the playoffs, he'd better get serious about an extension. Otherwise, he can help Chicago fight for 4th in their division...and play some golf while his buddies are advancing.

This recent surge has made the decision tougher I'm sure, but there's no way Regier can let Campbell walk for nothing. That'd be indefensible. It was one thing to keep pending free agents last year and the year before, when the team had a legitimate shot at the Cup. (A fact Gleason, Sullivan, and their ilk like to ignore when they're making their lists of players who walked away for nothing.) But it's a stretch to think this is a cup-caliber team this year, with or without Campbell.

Why?

If/when they get in the playoffs I think they have as good a chance as anyone to come out of the east with the experience they have and the fact that Ruff is the head coach. I would take him against anyone in a 7 game series and its not even close. On top of that, hot goalies and special teams make for legitimate cup contenders, they have the chance to have both.

No one knows what will be clicking for what team or who will be hurt etc so I don't understand why they cant be a cup contender if they make the playoffs.

All good points, and I hope you're right. Still, I don't think they are good enough defensively to make it through the East. Their defense was their main undoing last year, and I can't see how it's improved any this year. I still wouldn't take them in a 7 game series against Ottawa. They've yet to show they can consistently handle Alfreddson, Spezza, and Heatley.

Also this team has been bipolar all year. They've rattled off two impressive streaks before this current one, and followed them with horrendous losing streaks. You're assuming their current play will continue through the playoffs. I'm not.

Ryan Miller is the X-factor. He's been the best goalie in the league since the All Star break. If he plays like this in the playoffs, they could conceivably win the East. But it'll be tough for anyone from the East to win it all. The West just looks better this year.

Obviously, anything but signing Campbell is a risk. I just think it'd be a better risk to trade him. It wouldn't kill your playoff chances, and could conceivably set the team up for a more realistic run the next couple years.

This may not mean much, but I do believe Pratt's arrival has given the D a bit of grit that they didn't have last year.

The Sabres have the 4th best goals against average. The D corp has been playing very will lately. It seems they have upped the physical dimension of their game and it shows.

http://mirtle.blogspot.com/2008/02/rod-langway-award-update.html

This site compliled a formula to rank defensmen based on their 5 on 5 and PK abilities and guess who was number 1 overall: Hank Tallinder

Lydman came in at #9 which is no surprise considering he is Tallinders partner.

I know there is a perception that our D is sub-par but the numbers point in another direction. A big, physical RD would sure help this bunch out but they have been playing lights out during this win streak.
