View Full Version : I almost forgot...Vermette should be suspended...

The convincing victory almost made me forget that Antoine Vermette needs to be suspended. The play he made on Spacek was THE EXACT kind of play that Don Cherry always talks about when he advocates for 'no-touch' icing.

The fact that Vermette didn't even make an attempt at the puck and just made Spacek lose an edge right at the wall (essentially making Spacek's head go into the boards like a missle) is deplorable and dirty.

I think if the league doesn't do a suspension, Lindy needs to send out Mair or Peters to rough up Vermette the next time we meet Ottawa...their string of dirty bull$hit attempts at injuring our players needs to stop.

He should have gotten his ass kicked. I was really surprised and pretty pissed nobody ****ed him up for that. Especially Gaustad who was standing right there.

eh the puck and spaceks skate were pretty close especially when you're moving that fast. it wasn't the most dirty play.

Not sure if there is video...its conveniently missing from the TSN and Rogers highlights...

I'll check the Sabres own highlights...:jujubee:

During the first commercial break after it happened they had a mini interview with Vermette on the bench so he could state his case...

Its clear someone in the broadcasting team or within the Senators organization felt it important to have the guy try and clear it up.

They knew it was dirty and potentially suspendable.:jujubee:

I didn't think he did it on purpose...

he was genuinely concerned right afterwards...

those are the home town commentators, if it was vicious or dirty TSN would have shown it. come on now, they show everything. i am not saying it wasn't but the fact that i have not seen it makes me think it was not that bad.

it looked horrible...and I'm surprised it wasn't on TSN...

but the replay showed that injury wasn't Vermette's intention

This type of play happens a lot. No one ever really gets suspended for it. It wasn't vicious and it wasn't with ill intent. Vermette said he tried to go for the puck and Spacek accidentally stepped on his stick. That might have been legit for all we know. He was there and we weren't...

I agree no touch icing is a good idea, but I highly doubt Vermette was trying to hurt Spacek.

since it is vermette i will give him the benefit of the doubt, very clean player

I think your reaching on this one. Vermette even tried to catch him after he realized Spacek was going down and looked concerned following the play. It's Hockey, stuff like that is going to happen.

ii thought it was spezza spearing gaustad, not a bad one though.

not much intent behind it. definitely a penalty

agreed. paul hamilton was pretty peeved about it this morning, which surprised me because he's usually pretty level-headed about those things. but i highly doubt vermette meant to trip him up; he was just racing for the puck. spach was out there for his next shift. i was much more upset when goose got taken to the box along with spezza after that spear

Oh, I'm plenty pissed at that too.

But a spear in the abdomen to a stationary player isn't going to seriously injure Mair.

Taking away a guy's edge when he's skating at 25 MPH and his head thusly goes into the boards...

That's a much more dangerous scenario...

I'm done apologizing for these bull$hit 'seemingly harmless' acts by Senators players (or any other teams' players)

There have been guys in Spacek's shoes that lose entire seasons and never have all their mental faculties back after a head-on collision to the backboard.

I can't imagine how anyone would see that as a dirty play. Guy was clearly going for the puck.

Did you see the Rogers Sportsnet feed?

His stick goes directly into the side of Spacek's skate as Vermette was trailing far enough behind him that getting to the puck before Spacek was an impossibility.

If it wasn't intentional it was EXTREMELY CARELESS...in a situation where injury is totally possible.

Send him off for 2 games. :jujubee:

I was so happy at how we played last night and how we made Ottawa look like crap that I overlooked those plays,I hate the Sens so much I was giddy that we were throttling them.

You're watching it in slow motion. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to pull that off even if he meant to do that?

if youre gonna allow races to the puck for icing youre gonna end up with some situations like that. idk what you can do about it. vermette reached in between sissys legs to try to get to that puck but tripped him up instead. it wasnt intentional but dangerous for sure. so what do you do, create a rule you cant stick your stick between the guys legs when racing to the puck?

i really think they should just have no touch icing before somebody snaps a neck

Ok, two things:

1) You can't call Spacek sissy...I've seen him casually in person in the summer and his legs are built like fuqing horses legs...GIANT AND ALL MUSCLE.

2) He didn't reach in between Spacek's legs. He thrust his stick (last second mind you...he didn't position his stick until Spacek had begun to turn his skates to stop) into the side of Spacek's blade and made him lose an edge.

I don't care if its happening in super speed on the ice...He did what he did and you guys would be singing a completely different tune if Spacek was laying in the bed next to Zednik at Buffalo General Hospital with a busted vertebrae in his neck or something.

It looked really bad when it happened. I thought for sure Spacek was cooked for awhile. But, I have to say a play like that in a race for the puck...I think Vermette was just trying to sneak his stick in there to tag it, you can tear any play apart in super slow motion, and make it look like the guy had 5 minutes to make a decision. That was a bang bang play at full speed. Bad ending, but not intentional as I saw it.

ok two things:

1. ever since he made that movie carrie i can call him sissy

3. vermettes intention was to try to reach between his legs or perhaps just to one side of his feet to get to the puck first. regardless it was a dangerous play but currently within the rules. the net effect was that by the time he made the reach sissy had turned and he accidentally made him lose an edge. the point is that the league is essentially forcing those types of things to happen with an eventual outcome of somebody getting really hurt. theres absolutely no way you can expect a player to never make that kind of poke check when they are trying to get to the puck first. i say put an end to it now before some tragedy strikes

Z. I never even knew there was someone named Sissy Spacek...but ok...if you want to call him that.

9. Its a dangerous situation that warrants equally responsible play...Vermette didn't step up to that respinsibility.
