Construction on the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium began on November 30 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_30), 1939 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1939) and a grand opening celebration was held on October 14 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_14), 1940 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1940). Built for $2,700,000 the Aud was a WPA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Works_Progress_Administration) project.<sup id="_ref-0" class="reference">[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_Memorial_Auditorium#_note-0)</sup> The arena originally sat 12,280 for ice hockey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_hockey), with an additional 2,000-3,000 sitting in the floor area for basketball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basketball) and other events.
