The Bills were named as the result of the winning entry in a local contest, which named the team after the AAFC Buffalo Bills (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_Bills_%28AAFC%29), a previous football franchise from the All-America Football Conference (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-America_Football_Conference) that merged with the Cleveland Browns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleveland_Browns) in 1950. That team, in turn, was named after Buffalo Bill Cody (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_Bill).
