any linux owners out there? well, i know there are some of us who run it, but do you run it on a laptop w/ a wifi card that didn't work "out of the box"??
i have a wi-fi issue. i've tried a ton of stuff to fix it, so it's a lengthy post to describe it. i am a lazy bastard. so if no one has experience w/ ndiswrapper, mad-wifi, or other ways of installing a wireless card in a laptop (atheros chip card).... i don't want to type it all out. :D
if you have any experience w/ this stuff - please respond to this initial post b/c i am at my friggin' wit's end w/ this new card.

lol seamonkey.
I know I'm too late but I do run Linux on my laptop as well. What I ended up doing was finding out what chip-set my card uses and loading a driver for a different card(which uses the same chip-set) to get it working. :niterider

it was weird though.
i got the drivers to work. the card was being recognized. the network ESSID was being recognized and my friggin' card would NOT stay connected. wpa_gui worked for a few seconds, then stopped, then started, then stopped. it was weird.
i rebooted today. and voila! all is good. who knows.... :dunno:

i'm running it on an old 2001 gateway 5300 laptop w/ 733 mhz pentium III and 128 mb ram.
used the default install (only 1 cd) and fluxbox for the window manager. i haven't even started tweaking it for speed.
no noticeable time lags, whatsoever. it's almost like having a real laptop! :D
i had abiword on the same laptop w/ windows 2000 and it took 2 minutes to start - on this configuration/OS, it takes 2 seconds.
gawd, i  linux.

Word.. I read up on it. I'll stick with Ubuntu for now.. but once my laptop starts fossilizing I'll look into installing Vector. Looks awesome for legacy systems. :niterider
