At the Senior Bowl he posted slightly different rankings so I will update when tehy post it. He had Chenne up to #2 at QB. I think he also had Rivers and Connor 1 & 2.

Yes he does now. I didn't mean respectively, I just meant they were his top two with Highsmith down to 3 I believe.

btw, they have the clip of the film break down on Connor. I updated Connor's profile with a blurb, his bio and some highlight clip links.

Here's the link to the Mayock (http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d806276e2)film breakdown on Connor and to his Range profile: http://www.buffalorange.com/showthread.php?t=114501

Trey, I am curious your opinion on where you think Connor best fits. Mayock said he thinks he is best outside. I tend to think his best spot would be inside in a 3-4. I do think he can play any LB position because of his instincts and tackling ability but what would be the best spot for him? If the Bills drafted him, would you put him at will and leave Poz in the middle and Crow at Sam or mix things up?

treydawg
January 22nd, 2008, 2:43:11 PM
I think Connor is best suited inside but physically he needs to be outside. I'm not really sure how much more he can add to his frame as he isn't really built like Poz. Naturally, I think he's better in the middle. As I said before, I think Poz is better suited outside as well. I'd have to get a scouts perspective on what they think he can add to his frame before I'd say he's ready to anchor the middle. If they think he can add some bulk, I'd keep him inside and then move Poz outside.

BTW, despite his build, Connor gets off blocks awesome. He uses the blocker as a sort of shield where he will slide off them at the last minute to make a tackle. Watch his technique in the Senior Bowl, it's quite impressive.

I agree he does a great job sliding until the RB makes his cut upfield. The Mayock clip shows some great examples of what your talking about.

I think I'd rather keep Poz inside and move him to will. Poz is a brick wall in the middle. I really think the Bills run defense will be much improved next year simply by getting him back on the field.

I think Connor is better suited inside in a 3-4 where he can blitz and play more downhill and will have some big bodies in front to shield him from blockers.

treydawg
January 22nd, 2008, 3:05:41 PM
I think you're right about him being a good fit as a 3-4 inside backer. Also, I started warming up to Poz in the middle as he really is a tackling machine there. I can't wait to see what he does this year.

That's because Laurinitus - a junior - did not declare for the draft.

I realize it is early and rankings change significantly over the next 2+ months. I also realize that different "scouts" have different opinions.

However, the opinions (that the public has access to) that I put the most weight on is
Russ Lande of GM Jr and Sporting News. Lande has worked as an NFL scout for St Lous
and Cleveland. I tend to believe him more than guys who have no training or qualifications like Mayok. That doesn't necessarily mean Mayok is wrong all the time or that Lande is right all the time, but on-balance, I'd go with Lande's opinion.

That being said, here are some observations regarding Mayok's rankings based on Lande's current opinions and what I've read elsewhere.

John Carlson is the top TE??? The estimates of his time that I've seen are around 4.9 for the 40. Tons of LBs are faster than that. On top of that, Carlson had a weak SR year and isn't over-whelmingly big at 255ish.

Mario Manningham is the top WR?? Manningham is neither big nor especially fast. Where is Early Doucett? I guess Mayok hasn't accounted for Jrs yet.

What is so great about Limas Sweed? Here is a guy who caught 19 passes his last season in college. Yes, he is big for a WR, but his estimated speed is not great (OK, but not great) at 4.55. I sure as heck hope the Bills don't draft a WR in the first 2 rounds that caught 19 passes his last year in college.

I am not seeing this draft stack up well for the Bills first pick, particularly at their positions of need. If they are lucky Keith Rivers will be available when they pick. Based on what I've read, Conner won't go in round 1. They very likely will miss out on the only
2 DTs worth a turd in the draft in Dorsey and Ellis. I am not on-board with Dre Moore or Kentwan Balmer. Heck, I'd just as soon they bring Tim Anderson back as waste a pick on Moore or Balmer.

FWIW at this point, it looks like a CB is going to be head and shoulders the best player available at #11. While the Bills could sure use another CB, I don't think it is nearly as pressing a need as a good DT or LB. Unfortunately, there isn't much at DT after Dorsey and Ellis and the pickings are very slim at LB in round 1.

January 22nd, 2008, 8:25:31 PM
James Laurinaitis, one of the most decorated linebackers in Ohio State history, announced today he will return for his senior season.

The two-time All-American and winner of the Nagurski Trophy (2006) and Butkus Award (2007) is passing up a chance to be selected in the first 15 picks of the NFL draft, according to most projections.

"I know I can still improve as a player, and I know there is still much more to me and for the Buckeyes to accomplish," Laurinaitis said in a statement. "There are a lot of things that money can't buy, and some of those things are the experiences of a senior season. Going through those things with my teammates next year is what I look forward to the most."

The announcement means OSU will return 18 starters next season. Barring a last-minute change of heart or a big surprise, the only junior to leave early will be defensive end Vernon Gholston.

In the past four days, cornerback Malcolm Jenkins, receiver Brian Robiskie, linebacker Marcus Freeman and left tackle Alex Boone all announced they will stay for their senior seasons.

Laurinaitis was the 2007 Big Ten defensive player of the year, leading the Buckeyes with 121 tackles. He set a national championship game record last Monday with 18 tackles in a loss to Louisiana State.

Its incredible how little love Kevin Smith is getting right now...

If he falls and goes as the 6th or 7th RB in this draft... I will shit a brick. I mean, Jammal Charles?!? Hes fast. Thats about it...

I'm not a big fan of the sporting news. Keep in mind places like that will tag a name like Lande to there scouting reports but they have a staff of english majors writing scouting reports for players outside the top 25(How do I know this? My Wifes cousin works for there publishing company). Also I remember somebody posting a ranking from a scout that had 30 years experiance last year and had Willis behind both Poz and Beason. I think we all know how that turned out

Manningham is a Junior and I agree he isnt the top WR in this class. Sweed was hurt last year. +100000000000000000 on K.Rivers, hes the man

I dont know about ecstatic... but I think he would be pretty pleased. I mean, he would get paid a ton of money, possibly learn under Zach pending if he comes back or not, and most important... he would get to live in beautiful Miami.

Its a hell of a lot better than living in a place like Cleveland or something...

Also I remember somebody posting a ranking from a scout that had 30 years experiance last year and had Willis behind both Poz and Beason. I think we all know how that turned out

In the end, noone is always right when it comes to the draft. But Poz was injured and Beason played a fantastic season. From a 4-3 standpoint, I see nothing wrong with that order.

You dont think that Willis would be just as good in a 4-3 scheme?

I disagree with you... I would have Willis as the #1 ILB... regardless of the scheme...

Poz was leading the whole league in tackles before he got injured. Give the kid a chance to play.

Did you see Beason play? I saw both and I don't think it's set in stone that one is #1 and the other #2. Poz hasn't played enough to make a judgement.

Did you see Beason play? I hyped him before the draft, and when I finally saw him play I thought "After all my failues, I finally got one right". :D I don't think it's set in stone that one is #1 and the other #2.

Its still early but I would rank them

Willis
Beason
Poz

Willis is what i thought he would be, a Beast. The kid is a machine out there. I mean to lead the league in tackles your rookie season is pretty impressive. Especially on a 5-11 team

Beason had a very good season but didnt get a lot of recognition. I liked him before the draft and would have been fine w/ him at 12

and Poz, well Poz has to stay healthy. The early returns on him were good but if you cant stay healthy it doesnt mean much. Injuries happen there part of the game but i've seen guys who looked real good but couldnt stay on the field. I hope hes not one of thoughs guys
