The Bills draft for 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Bills swing a draft trade with the Dallas Cowboys and tradeThe Bills first round pick(#11) for
Dallas's 1st and 2nd this year and 3rd and 4th next year
(570 points for 360 points this year and 160 + 58 points next year)

This gives the Bills picks:
1st round #22 overall
2nd round #43 and #54
3rd round #72 and #74

they then trade their first 3rd round pick(from Balt) and use it to trade their
2nd round pick up into the 1st round.

they then have two picks in the first (#22 and #25), one in the second (54) and
one in the third(#75). (plus their 4th & higher round picks)

With these picks they take

#22 Malcolm Kelly WR Oklahoma.......the big WR to complement Evans
#25 Kentwan Balmer 6-5 295 North Carolina.......a fast penetrating DT
#54 Martellus Bennete TE Texas A&M
and
#74 either a CB (patrick lee 6-2 200 Auburn/Terell thomas 6-0 USC) or
......Eric Young OG 6-4 305 Tenneseee (OG or C)
#107 Vince Hall LB virginia tech 5-11 240 or Branden Albert OG 6-6, 335 Virginia

An improvement to the receiving corp with a good 2nd (1st?) WR and a TE.
An improvement to the defense with a DT to replace Triplet in the rotation and a big CB
and a good OG/C or LB depth.

They also stockpile two pcks for next year. With other activity, they also pick up a 3rd/conditional 2nd round pick for JP Losman for next year. Next year they will have a
one #1, two #2's two #3's and two #4's to play with. The talent level continues to improve.

If the Bills can get Kelly, Balmer and Bennett. I think this draft would be a success.

I like the trade down. At 22 Kelly or Sweed should still be there. But, I wouldn't trade back up. I think you could get DTs Pat Sims or Dre Moore and either LBs Highsmith or Adibi. 2 defensive starters beat one.

I think a trade down is a real possibility. The only holdup is finding someone willing to trade up. The number of teams inclined to trade down is almost always higher than the # that want to trade up.

Im not sure about trading down. There is usually an impact player on the board at 11 and that is what this team desperately needs.

IF all of our need players are gone (Ellis, Rivers, etc..) I guess I wouldn't be opposed to picking up some more picks. You can't really decide on a move like that untill you are on the board with the 11th pick and see who's still there.

I think there might be a chance a guy like Kelly can slip inot the second round, those big WRs can really take a dive if they have a disappionting 40 time. Last year a guy like Dewayne Jarrett realy fell as the draft got closer, early on in the process he was talked about as a possibility for the Bills at number 12. The WR position seems to be one of those things were teams have to find a good fit to take a guy that high, so who knows the Bills might get lucky and get their guy in round 2.

At this point I am comfortable with them addressing one of their defensive needs with the 11th pick; DT, WLB or CB. Either one of those picks should make an immediate impact if not start from day one. Personally I think they should get a top flight CB or OLB and address the DT in FA, but they have such big needs at any of those spots that I wouldn't object to either of them.

Just curious, what is Dallas's motivation to trade up?

They see someone that they want higher or they see somebody special that unexpectedly falls to the #11 position. It doesn't have to be Dallas- anybody in the mid-twenties would do.

It looks like Mc Fadden will be dropping. Hopefully he's sitting there at 11 and someone makes a play for him (Dallas).

I essentially have a similar draft prediction. I like your thinking. BTW, Dallas (or another team) might want to trade up for an OT, for example - a position we don't need in the first round but which may well represent the best value at #11. I also like Pat Sims a little better than Kentwan Balmer, although not by much.

Finally, I would reverse this prediction and trade up instead if Glenn Dorsey happened to fall to #8, which I consider unlikely.

I agree, I would trade up a few slots for one of the two top defensive tackles. It would be an immediate improvement for all our defensive players. The tamper defense needs a DT who can get pressure on the QB- then a lot of other good things happen.

I see him (off-field problems or not) going to Oakland 4th or the Jets 6th

I still maintain that pick #11 is a wheelhouse pick because it is on the cusp of blue chip material at say CB, OT,and QB as examples. The trade down is always an option, but the Bills, in my opinion should target Ellis or Dorsey because they are impact types a team could build a championship defense around! Remember, draft day is a frenzy of activity, and trades come out of nowhere, and Brohm QB, Clady OT, Williams OT, or McKelvin CB are possibilities for any team drafting lower, if the price is right.

I like your scenario of trading down. I love the idea of getting dorsey or sedrick.

The problem is that the first three picks of this draft could be defensive line. Long, Dorsey, and Ellis. If we can't get one of those two, then trade down.
