View Full Version : Shanahan hit - Where's the captain?

Seeing as the Shanahan hit seems to be a hot topic, the big question is where was the Sabres captain? With nine seconds left and the goalie pulled I have to think Campbell was on the ice when it happened and also at the end of the game. Was Hecht and Pominville (alternates) out there too? That was the time when a leader on the club needed to step up and be a leader. That was the time to finally draw a line in the sand and say enough is enough. The only guy who seems to have any offense - McArthur- is lying in a heap on the bench and our three friggin leaders are already in the showers. Even Euro captains like Alfredsson and Sundin would've had some type of retaliation to that play. Better yet if the same thing happened to Housley when Ruff was captain, would he have retaliated. You better believe it!
What's the worst that could've happened a one or two game suspension? Heck, they can't win any of those three in the lineup so what would it matter if they got suspended.

Campbell doesn't think that beating up on old men will help him get a bigger contract.

Maybe the time to get Shanny back wasn't during the end of that game when the Sabres were trying to score. But next time we play the Rags, if someone doesn't do something (at least a clean, but very heavy and painful body check) then I'll be right where everyone else is.

And I thought Peters presence was supposed to prevent things like this from happening? Every time one of our guys gets cheap-shotted, think about Peters lack of purpose.

Going after Shanny at that point would have been the stupidest thing one of the guys could have done. you go after Shanny the draw comes out of the zone and gives us a zero percent chance of scoring. At least the way it turned out we had the draw in the zone giving us a chance to score.

If we did retaliate people on here would be bitching because they weren't thinking and caused the faceoff to come out. Hindsight we could have jumped Shanny because it didn't matter anyways.

Um, Spacek is the Captain for January, but he is still injured, so he could not help.

Campbell got the C while Spacek is sidelined

Irrelevant. Peters was dressed. His mere presence on the bench should be enough to dissuade this sort of thing from happening, according to the knuckle dragging, old-school goon proponents.

Peters has no presence. He's a joke. Have you not seen his fights lately?!??!?!

Shanny would kill Campbell

It's the principle that counts, not the outcome.

He was too busy calling off negotiations and somehow convincing the simpletons of WNY that the Sabres front office is to blame.

Sorry morons. Lindy will not even a score with 9 seconds left and a face off in their zone when we've lost 9 in a row.

These people just don't get it, they just like to bitch and complain. If someone did something to Shanny they would be bitching about losing your head is a crucial time.

Yes I agree. Read again. I was mocking the party line from the supporters of having a one dimensional (if that) goon on the bench. They're supposed to be a deterrent even when they're not on the ice, which Peters clearly isn't, given how often our skill players get manhandled.

Like I've said before and I'll say it again. You don't need a letter on your jersey to stand up for a teamate. I don't think Shanny's a dirty player by any means. I'd rather have somebody who actually gives a damn about winning than somebody who is more interested in contract talks.

Oh yeah, so many guys have been "manhandled" That's bullshit.

Our opponents go so far as to admit publicly, on a pretty regular basis, that that's their strategy when playing the Sabres. I know it pretty much cripples your argument for Peters, but nobody in the league is intimidated by him or anyone else on this team.
