Sabres Coach Lindy Ruff was furious when Brendan Shanahan shoved forward Clarke MacArthur with 9.5 seconds left and MacArthur went sliding hard into the Rangers' goal. No penalty was called, but Ruff said that Shanahan should be suspended. "It was careless, reckless," Ruff said. "You can't have that happen. He could have a broken neck, a broken shoulder, a broken back. If he isn't seriously hurt, he's lucky." - NY Times

sure it was a bit rough but lets focus on turning this thing around not on this garbage.

I'm glad Lindy sticks up for his guys....the garbage is not the outburst by Ruff, it's the hit. It's a real fine line because if MacArthur did end up hurt I hope you would be singing a different tune.

why don't you post the shanahan comments on it?

you know, the one where he says that was careless and reckless and he's glad he didn't seriously hurt the kid?

Whining? Ruff is 100 percent right. Any coach in the NHL would be complaining about that hit. It could have ended the career of one of the Sabres' best young players. At least Shanny was contrite. I'm sure it was inadverent, but a one- or two-game suspension wouldn't hurt.

There's a difference between whining and sticking up for your players. This was clearly the latter. Shanahan himself said it was a bad hit.

He's a little whiny...

Shanahan implicated himself after the game, so there's really no need for Lindy to make a public statement about the 'intent to injure' or how bad 'Clark could have been injured.'

If the Sabres want to pursue a suspension or bring the incident to the attention of Colin Campbell, then do it via fax or something.

The press conference should be about YOUR teams' performance (or lack thereof) it shouldn't be about calling out aggressors (unless of course, you're making a public threat like "Next time we meet this team *so and so* will definitely feel our presence."

Well, I won't groan you because you made a lucid point (unlike our favorite Leaf-troll who has yet to find a brain), but I will disagree with you. Lindy is sticking up for his player here. In a situation as dangerous as this that's a must for a coach. It's not as if Lindy was whining over a phantom dive call or some minor penalty that cost the team a goal. Something like what happened to Clark could have cost him his career.

Now, kudos to Shanny for manning-up and taking responsibility for his actions. However, does anyone know if Ruff knew what Shanahan had said? And to the point about the PC being about your team's performance, well, did one of the reporters ask him about it or did he just comment on it out of the blue? I admit I didn't see the PC, but you have to give Ruff the benefit of the doubt in this situation. Especially given the number of injuries we've had lately, he should be pissed and he should be standing up for his guy.

Some of you are calling Lindy "whiny" because the team is losing and your pissed about it. Dont you think he's frustrated too with his teams play, AND then add in a blatant bad hit that could've taken out one of his younger players? He already has a team beat up physically and then something like that hit happens. What do you want him to do, give a PC and not say a word? You dont think the other teams are not gunning for the Sabres now that they arent very good and the other teams can get some pay back after the beatings some of them took last year at the hands of the Sabres? Get a grip. You know this teams sucks, Lindy knows it. What do you want him to do? Quit? Tell his guys to just show up and STFU? Trade someone? Get real, no trades until Larry Q says so. Darcy just makes it happen when he's told, and Lindy coaches with what talent he is given. He wouldnt even be here if the front office wouldnt of blind-sided him last year and signed him, THEN let all our talent out the door. Stop blaming the coach. And stop Whining yourselves, its gettin old.

i have a question: if lindy ruff says anything for the rest of the year that doesn't involve "let's turn this thing around"... is that being whiny. can he ask his wife to pass the peas? or is that being whiny? "pass the peas and let's turn this thing around!"

some of you guys are crazy.

he spoke the truth. he didn't say anything about how the loss was anybody's fault but the Sabres. he stuck up for his player. and he said the SAME ****ING THING THAT SHANAHAN SAID.

so stop trolling.

I love the fact that Lindy sticks up for his players and cares enough for them to get heated. But now I want to see the Sabres have players that will attack back,I am tired of passive. Give me three Brad May types that will decapitate anyone that dares take liberties.Out with the "look the other way types", in with the "take care of our own,I got your back" types.

I think we take offense to it because while some are jumping off the ship, there are still some of us that believe in Lindy and the Sabres as a whole. Yeah, this is a tough time for Sabre fans, but I am glad people are taking offense to comments like this. I will not jump ship, damnit....the Sabres are still going to make the playoffs this year.

"Sour grapes" implies jealousy. Who here would have any coherent reason to be jealous of the flaming wreck of a hockey organization that is the Toronto Maple Leafs?

Well I guess you whine pretty well also then because you have cryed about players that need to be kicked out of the league, like Chris Simon. It is the same thing that Ruff did.

come on, simon is a vicious scumbag. shanny has no rep for being a nasty player at all.

anyway, its over. I just can't stand coaches who call out players on other teams.
