NEW YORK … Defenseman Jaroslav Spacek skated with the Buffalo Sabres today in Madison Square Garden and coach Lindy Ruff said it's possible his January captain could be available for the team's games this weekend.
Spacek, who has been battling a back injury, will not play tonight when the Sabres meet Chris Drury and the New York Rangers for the first time this season. Spacek left last Thursday's loss at Ottawa early with the injury and sat out Saturday's game against New Jersey in HSBC Arena.
"It's still bothering him but we're hopeful," Ruff said today. "He's going to keep doing some extra skating. The conversation I had with him was if he'd be ready or not .‚.‚. and it's 50-50."
After tonight's game, the Sabres host Atlanta on Friday and begin an eight-game road swing Saturday in Toronto. Buffalo then plays Monday in Phoenix. Ruff said it's likely backup goaltender Jocelyn Thibault will get the start in one of those three games. Ryan Miller will go tonight.
Derek Roy (shoulder) skated with the team today although he is not yet cleared for contact. Maxim Afinogenov and Tim Connolly (groins) both sat out the workout and will again be out tonight.
