View Full Version : Moving to Buffalo in one week!

As a life long Bills fan I'm so excited about having my home, be the same city as my favorite team!

I have a couple questions. First and most important...Time Warner Cable or Direct TV? I do have a HD set. I must watch football in HD, at least the Bills away games....season tix for the home ones! woohoo! Second.. What are some things a new Buffalo resident absoutely must eat, experience and see? Third and last. I found a place on Elmwood St. It seems like a pretty cool, 'happening' place, but in the wnter everything looks a little dirty so it's hard to tell. I just liked the fact that it is within walking distance of a lot of conveniences and a nice big park a few blocks away.

I really do not know the city of Buffalo very well, so any pointers and advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

D

Damn bro, you've never actually lived up there? Awesome. :)

I'm a suburban boy heading home in a month or so, so I cant' tell you much about downtown. But Elmwood - don't worry about it, you're in a good place. :D

Edit: I hate the cable co boxes with a passion. DTV for me....

Either way you slice it, Time Warner, DTV, Dish Network, they all have their glitches and problems. My experience has been though, that Direct TV has the better HD choices. I have DTV, and I have about 90 HD channels. That part is freakin tits. However, DTV does not have CBS in HD, so that's a problem. I have no clue why, but I've been putting off that phone call as to why. Cable companies are worthless.

Just be careful where you move downtown. I've lived in the ghetto on the east and west side and its no fun. Elmwood is a nice street. Go Directv, I live in Texas now and I can watch all the Sabres and Bills games. DTV is a sportsfans dream. As far as food you gotta have a chicken finger sub, some Buffalo wings, beef on weck and some chiavetta's just to name a few.

we moved to orchard park 11/1 ... directv "can" be great, but ... msg controls the sabres games so all games are not hd. also be careful, directv has been a bit of a pain to deal with. ......

food wise: OMG, wait for billsman to post, but so far >> the newer duffs is great for wings & beef on week is good; on chippewa there is jims steakout = great subs & tacos, anchor bar on main street is the "home" of wings & wings are good ... i can't say the "best" ... if you are a pizza guy .. OMG try blasdell pizza. we get pizza from the blasdell on 20 (aka southwestern) and it is the BEST pizza. ... when you are in orchard park and/or @ stadium ... big tree for drinks & food is good ... or dannys - i say dannys food is better than big tree ... my favorite for wings in OP is the warehouse (same owners as duffs) ...

to be honest though, billsman really has the lowdown on the spots to hit ...

welcome to the area

Thank you for the recommendations, it's appreciated. I love to eat, and it's looking like I chose a good place live for that..lol Duff's sounds really good. Mmm beef on weck. The only place I can get that here is Wegmans, and it's a special they only do every once in a while...I just consider myself lucky to have a Wegmans in PA.lol There's a Jims Steakout just up the street from my mew place, I'll have to check that out too. I'll just have to try them all out. :D

Thanks,

Blasdell pizza is damn damn good. Also try LaNova, Bocce Club, and Pizza Junction.

If you don't have a Beef on Weck then you don't belong here. :D Try Charlie the Butcher, Annacones, and Schwaebels.

Salen's hot dogs only. If you eat anything else the locals will look at you like a child molester.

Have a loganberry drink and an ice cold can of Vernors.

Don't you dare put Heinz BBQ sauce on that chicken BBQ. Chivetta's Marinade or go back to whence thou came from.

Shovel the little old lady neighbor's sidewalk and driveway when the snow gets deep. If you take money you are an opprotunist. Accepting coffee or a hot chocolate is OK though. Make sure to thank her and mean it!

Schmie's Italian Butcher on Delaware. Get some parsely and cheese sausage. You'll be in heaven.

Something is seriously wrong with you if you live in Erie Co. and don't have Bills season tickets.

Say hello to someone in passing on the sidewalk. Trust me. They won't freak out. In fact, it's expected.

After the 3rd trip to the falls the casino will be much more exciting. Use the falls as a place to wow out of town buddies.

When eating at McDonalds in Fort Erie Canada make sure to toss the Big Mac carton on the ground on the way out. They make us look bad. Do your part.

Before ordering a sub, ask if they are served on a Costanza's sub roll. If they are you will soon be in gustatory nirvana.

It's 4AM. Do you know where your children are and why are you not at Mighty Taco?

Get a fly rod and discover some mindblowing trout and salmon fishing on some of the more beautiful streams in nature that you'll ever see. Plus a 7 lb steelhead is nice too.

Hope you like snow.

Summers are beautiful. Buy a portable AC unit for the occassional muggy night.

When at Wegmans if the cashier asks you to donate a dollar or two to feeding hungry children then put in 3. Why? Because even the families that have hungry children donate. We're not long island.

There is a reason Labbat's Blue (hereforth always referred to as "blue") takes up 2/3's of the beer aisle. Take the hint.

Canadians are good people. Be nice to them. You can make fun of their goofy accent AFTER they leave.

Must go to Crystal Beach in the summer for a swim.

If Mickey Rat's is still around and you are not there at least once in August then the police will arrest you.

New England has seafood. Buffalo has THE fish fry. No one makes better beer battered haddock than half a million catholics on Friday.

You won't be living in the rest of the country anymore. Open doors for people and say "excuse me" in a polite manner when it's appropriate.

When the NY State Police stop you then you'll know what a Soviet dissident felt like when the KGB knocked on his door.

If you have children and you live outside of the city proper then they will actually get an education.

Don't think it odd to see an 80 year old woman with a Bills jacket on.

Throwing snowballs is considered rude. Unless it's at the Dolphins or Patriots team bus. Then it is rude not to. That's because the guy next to you has more to throw now.

Allegheny State Park. Summers are great but a weekend cabin in the fall is heavenly escape. Provided your stocked up with firewood and "Blue".

Go to the ATM, take out some money, and buy a really nice house.

Polish Villa. Galumpkis. Do it. God will forgive you for the indulgence. When you see him there eating thank him for putting polish people on the planet. They make great food and are easy to make fun of.

I'd avoid small pickup trucks unless you have 200 lbs of sandbags handy.

First appliance to buy is a snowblower.

Ask a Canadian to teach you how to open a beer with everything from a car key, lighter, to beanbag chair.

If you smoke (which you shouldn't) and insist on trying a Canadian ciggarette, then call 911 in advance. Have oxygen on standby and plenty of gum.

The best way to deal with the city and county politicians is to become an alcoholic.

In other cities like say Atlanta or Miami you have to leave at 7 am to get downtown for work at 9. Hop in the car at 8:40 or you'll be twiddling your thumbs at your desk for almost 2 hours.

Don't be an elitist class snob or even the nuns and alter boys will pummel you.

Do you have an ice scrapper?

The best heroin can be found within 5 blocks of Erie County Medical Center. It's nice that a trauma center is located where it most needs to be.

Ted's Hot Dogs! Lots of Ted's Hot Sauce too. Don't be a wuss. Do it!

Good for you!

Go here to get some info on downtown. Links to places to live, where to shop, entertainment, etc.

It was a good reference for me when I was close to moving back recently (been gone since 1995).

Hopefully, that will help you get acclimated even before you get there.

Definately check out Jim's Steakout; best Chicken Finger sub in WNY. Duff's and the Anchor Bar have excllent wings; along with most pizzeria's in these parts. I swear, the shittiest wings you can find around here are 10x better then the crap ive been served down south or out west.

Elmwood and Allen street have a ton of little restaurants that are worth checking out.

Prepare your liver because last call aint till 4AM :pickle:

Labatt Blue is pretty much the beer of choice around b-lo. Corporate HQ are now located right in the city.

Definately check out Niagara Falls (The Wonder of the World). You'll discover how shitty the city is upon your first visit. The Canadian Niagara Falls is much better spot to find stuff do if your in those parts.

Check out Artpark in Lewiston; Ton's of trails to hike the Gorge and excellent fishing. Free concerts on Tuesday's in the summer.

Thanks for all the recommendations! Sounds like I'm going to gain 20lbs in the first two months. lol After reading all these replies, I did some more research and found out that I live in Elmwood Village. I didn't even know that it was rated as one of the top 10 neighborhoods in the country.... I'm even more excited now. :D

You're 35, like food, beer and you're moving to B-Lo? Yeah, you'll pack on some pounds. Now one way to stave that off is to walk. You're in a great part of town, you'll be able to walk all over Elmwood Village during the day for shopping and culture and at night to the bars, lol! If nothing else walking will help.....for a little while. Another great place is Delaware park, not too far from you. Hell, you can walk around the park, visit the Zoo and play/walk 18 holes of (cheesy, but getting better) golf. All for less than $25 TOTAL!

Best of luck to you on the move...I'm envious as hell :D

I forgot to mention the "Canadian Ballet" across the border.

Canada has some of the best strip clubs you'll ever come across. They don't have any silly laws so the chicks are completely naked.

Check out the Sundowner which is my favorite. All the girls there are "model" hot.

I took my bro's and my Dad there a few years back. We got this girl who was maybe one of the finest looking women I've EVER seen to dance for us. We kept her at our table for about an hour. Her image is forever burned in my memory. ;)

If memory serves me right...go on a weekend, that's when the super hotties are there.

They just had an article today in the Buffalo News saying that they will be requiring a Birth Certificate + Driver's license in the spring.

I already have a passport so im not worried about it. They also mentioned they will be offering an "enhanced" driver's license which will be permitted for entrance; ofcourse it costs extra.

I actually don't mind going on like a Tuesday night because it is not as busy and you can get a seat right at the stage tables. Regardless of whatever night I've ever gone, every single girl in there has been drop dead hot.

No CBS HD on Directv. Contract problems with parent company. I would still go with Directv though because of all the other HD channels, along with the Big Ten network, the NFL network and the NHL network in HD. For CBS, you can buy a run of the mill antenna and pull in the HD feed of CBS just fine. That is what I do. And congrats on your move to Buffalo! You will love the summers here, and the winters here lately haven't been much. We are living off the reputation of the blizzard of 77. As for food, you came to the right place. I would go to Chef's for italian food, Duff's for chicken wings. Really there are just a ton of great places to eat in this area.

i live in the heart of EV (Elmwood Village) Potomac Ave. Let me tell you, you are in for a treat. Lived in WNY my whole life and never really appreciated the city untill i moved to the village two years ago. You can walk around the streets esp. Lincolin pkwy, the houses there are insane. 1/2 of Deleware park is less than 5min drive, 10min walk. Concerts on the lawn on Bidwell parkway during the summer, as well as farmers market every weekend. The bars are great Jims down around the corner. Some great coffee shops to set up shop and people watch. I could go on for days. You are prolly living quite close to where i live. You on Elmwood Ave itself?

Thanks, I can't wait for next Friday....I haven't had decent pizza or wings since I moved from Syracuse to PA three years ago. I'll be on the 800 block of Elmwood itself. The more I read on this thread about Buffalo, and articles on Elmwood Village, the more impatient I get. I can't wait to get the hell out of PA. :D

Edit: I decided to keep my Direct TV. Thanks, Joey, for the advice on the antenna. That should solve my CBS away game HD issues...or I can just walk to a bar near me probably. :)

Smart choice keeping your Directv. As a sports fan, Time Warner can't touch what Directv can offer. As a Directv customer and Bills season ticket holder myself, I can't switch to a service I hate for 8 away Bills games a year. Look at it this way, there are other ways of getting CBS HD. Can you say the same for the NFL network and the ninety some channels of HD Directv provides?

I live in the Elmwood Village and love it!....I have been all over the States and, pound for pound, is as good as any city neighborhood you will find....IMO, it is the only place to live in the area if you like city life....unfortunately, it is an enclave surrounded by blight and decay....so sad....it's also homogenized and not as cosmopolitan as many would have you believe....with that said, it is the most politically progressive place in the metro region and welcomes if not encourages people to let their "freak flag fly"...there are so many wonderful streets and homes and parks and shops and great bars. Plenty of places to ride a bike and in the summer there are lots of cultural events...again, you picked the BEST place to live in Buffalo....Congrats and welcome to my neighborhood!

I liked LaNova a lot, but now I'm in the mood for a hand tossed style. :D Any recommendations are appreciated.

For what you're looking for, check out Manhattan Pizza on Allen. I think it's right near the corner of Elmwood and Allen.

Edit: It might be called something else. Maybe it's actually NY Pizza, but it's right near that corner.

go to mister pizza, should be a couple blocks north of you. I think they have a menu online, they have many different types of pizza and you can get the crust anyway you like.

A couple of things I can think of:

If you're ever downtown by the HSBC arena, head over to Pearl St. Grill and Brewery. It's a really interesting place to go to. Delicious food, awesome micro brews and an ambience that rivals any other Grille in Buffalo.

In the summertime, two things you must check out (if they still have them):
1. Shakespeare in the Park (Deleware Park)- It's free but donations are appreciated and you'll be in for a treat. It's outside, you its best to bring a blanket/ lawn chair and a cooler of brew or a nice bottle of Chianti or you're fav wine.

2. Thursday in the Square (TITS)- once again, free live music, plentiful beer and a cool experience for sure.

I am planning to move into the city myself. I want to get out of Angola.

However, and I believe someone has already mentioned this, Mickey Rats in Angola, on old lake Shore Rd. is an awesome destination int he summer. beautiful girls, volleyball, drinks on the beach, and of course "Dancing Carl," a guy us Angolians affectionately call, who is there nearly every day, just dancing to the live music. Buy him a drink if you see him down there.

Lastly, just check out the architecture of the city. Most folks will tell you Buffalo has the best food, drinks and sports around, but the city also has some beautiful buildings. Our Naval Park is interesting as well.

Enjoy the city! (It's not as bad as people say it is)

welcome d...I'm also on Elmwood...700 block...so really close...

its a great place to live, especially when the weather starts getting better...festivals, live music, movies...awesome...

and the kicker...its affordable...

I've lived in San Francisco and Washington DC...and while they have places like the Elmwood Village...its tought to afford to live in those areas...

I'd be up for a beer and Sabres game too...although joeystrass might not appreciate my love of the Giants...BEAT LA BEAT LA

Thanks for the recommendations. I had the NY pizzaria place deliver. It was good. I can definitely see myself gaining a few pounds soon. lol

I'm really loving it here. It was great tonight... I walked across the street to the Lexington Market for some food, over to Blockbuster for my movie, across the street to some other cool local market, and finaly to a cool little sweets shop for desert, then home. From someone who has lived in the stix for three years, I think this is some cool livin' over here. :D I'm loving my new home.

I recently moved back after 6 years away (this time). I realize that this place has what's important to me. I lived all over Florida, in Ohio, Canada, Indiana and Texas. They were all ok places, but were just missing something.

I'm back to stay this time. I realize that everything I thought I was looking for is right here. That's why we have vacations. When you need your fix of sun or mountains or whatever, you go on vacation for a week or two and you're good to go! :D

Welcome! I'm so glad you are enjoying your new home...

You know what sucks...my wife (also from B-Lo) doesn't want to relocate there when we retire from the AF. We're really unsure where we'll go (still have 5 years to go). We've lived all over the world, and I still love a lot about B-Lo and so does the Mrs, but she still doesn't want to live near the city. She says at least 3 to 6 hours away would be good. I think a lot of that has to do with the stress of living near family and most of ours is still there.

Definitely the grass isn't always greener on the other side thinking. The great thing about Buffalo is that if you want to go on a vacation, you can easily reach large parts of the country in no time. I have enjoyed my trips to Orlando and Las Vegas, but Buffalo is my home and always will be.
