While the addition of Sergei Samsonov will hopefully work out for the Hurricanes, the team is trying to acquire a defenseman, reports the Raleigh News & Observer.
With Justin Williams expected to miss the rest of the regular season and Matt Cullen recovering slowly from a concussion, Samsonov played on a line with Cory Stillman and Rod Brind'Amour during last night's 1-0 win over Boston.

Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford is now trying to acquire an offensive-minded defenseman.

"With injuries and what teams are trying to do to improve their teams, the types of defensemen teams are trying to get are hard to come by," Rutherford told the paper "The market value is high, and it's difficult to acquire what you need."

The News & Observer claims Colorado Avalanche defenseman John-Michael Liles is believed to be at the top of Carolina's wish list.
Liles, who can become an unrestricted free agent July 1, is apparently on the trade block.

The paper notes Phoenix Coyotes' Derek Morris, Los Angeles Kings' Tom Preissing and Edmonton Oilers' Joni Pitkanen may be on the market.

I'd send them Liles for the right price, and then the AVS can reaquire Morris to fill Liles void.

Besides Eric Staal (who they would never trade for Liles) their isin't much else I would want from the Canes. Cole would be nice, but I don't see them trading him either and after that they don't have much I would want that would warrent giving up Liles.
