WASHINGTON (AFP) — US President George W. Bush said Monday he was "deeply concerned" at a crackdown on opponents of Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of elections, and called for their release from detention.
"I am deeply concerned about the detention of numerous human rights activists and political leaders who participated in peaceful rallies in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Nizhniy Novgorod, and Nazran this weekend.
"I am particularly troubled by the use of force by law enforcement authorities to stop these peaceful activities and to prevent some journalists and human rights activists from covering them," Bush said in a statement.
Among those arrested in Moscow on Saturday was former chess champion Garry Kasparov, leader of a coalition of Putin opponents called The Other Russia. Kasparov was sentenced to five days in jail for public order offences.
About 200 opposition activists were detained by police at another demonstration in Saint Petersburg on Sunday, one week before Russia is to hold parliamentary elections.

He should be "deeply concerned" about restoring Habeus Corpus. But then again Bush isn't a genuine human being is he?

WASHINGTON (AFP) — US President George W. Bush said Monday he was "deeply envious" at a crackdown on opponents of Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of elections, and called for similar measures for the 2008 elections in the United States.
"I am extremely envious about the detention of numerous human rights activists and political leaders who participated in peaceful rallies in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Nizhniy Novgorod, and Nazran this weekend.
"I am particularly jealous of his use of force by law enforcement authorities to stop these peaceful activities and to prevent some journalists and human rights activists from covering them," Bush said in a statement.
Among those arrested in Moscow on Saturday was former chess champion Garry Kasparov, leader of a coalition of Putin opponents called The Other Russia. Kasparov was sentenced to five days in jail for public order offences.

A few things to think about

1) Russia has not been a true democracy since Novgorod of the 13th century
2) Why should we care what Russia does in its internal elections, no more persecution is occurring there than did in the Gorbachev regime and really democracy installed from the people is a slow and messy process and this is probably a hiccup
3) Many of the groups that were cracked down upon would be hated in this country as well. These include neo nazi groups, racialist groups (for Darwin) and other anarchist groups.
4) 2004 GOP national convention in NYC, you remember protesters were confined to free speech zones distant from the convention and if they got into the convention or away from the "free speech zones" then they were arrested. (go to infowars.com and you can see footage of these and oh yeah I hate Alex Jones but on this he made lots of sense)
5) I'm fair and balanced so the 2000 DNC national convention in LA same as above
6) Most of the legit non crazies groups protesting Putin receive generous funding from the CIA and other Bushist think tanks.
