According to ESPN this morning, Callahan was fired in a meeting with Tom Osborne.
Obviously, Turner Gill will be a leading candidate. But so will Bo Pelini.
Other names I've heard could be in the initial mix:
Larry Coker
Barry Alvarez
Paul Johnson (Navy)

Sad news for the UB Bulls program which for the first time were being taken seriously as an up and coming program.Damn you Bill Callahan.

i also saw that former Minnesota coach Glen Mason was in the mix. Probably not a front-runner.

why turner gill?
he's not done anything yet. do you think that the nebraska boosters who are used to winning national championships are gonna bring in some (basically) unknown coach?
not gonna happen, IMO.

You do realize he was one of the greatest QBs in the history of their program, right? He had a 28-2 record, was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 1983, and played for a National Title. And that was when current AD Tom Osborne, who will make this hire, was the head coach.
Also, he has been an assistant coach there twice already. And in those five years as an assistant, they won 3 National Titles. He was also Eric Crouch's QB coach there when Crouch won the Heisman.
Point is, he is hardly an unknown in Nebraska......and he's paid more dues than you probably realize.

My wife is a Nebraska Alumnus and grew up there and she really wants Gil. He's a hero to Nebraskans, and they respect him. He coached there for years under Osborne and Solich and many thought he should have gotten the job after Solich was fired.

Turner Gill is by no means a unknown coach. The truth is UB was lucky to land him.I do hope he stay and if he dose I will be buying season tickets next year.

His name? And he is a good coach. He has put UB on the road to respectability in just two years.

they just fired a former NFL coach and they are gonna do what? bring in a coach from a 5 win team? i'm not saying turner gill isn't a good coach. i LOVE what he's done w/ UB. especially since i got to watch them pummel temple in philly this year.
but he is not what a nebraska booster is looking for, IMO.

Tell her I'm flattered, but I don't mess around with married women.

Callahan always did seem an odd choice, even if he was the 5th choice for the Huskers.

Spot on. Gill has done wonders for UB, and I think he's fantastic, but Nebraska can't really justify hiring a guy with a 7-17 career record. I'm sure he'll get a semi-serious look from Tom Osborne, but the job will in the end go to someone with a better, more proven track record as a coach.

I hope your right C-19 cause he would be a huge loss for the UB program if he gose.

I'm sure you can. But you called him an "unknown" coach to the Nebraska faithful, which is ridiculous.
That's like saying Doug Flutie is "unknown" to the people of Boston College.
..but he is not what a nebraska booster is looking for, IMO.
I agree that the time may not be quite right for Gill, yet. But what exactly do you think they are looking for? The other coach that looks to be a leading candidate is Bo Pelini, and he's never even been a head coach.
You think they will insist on a guy with BCS conference head coaching experience?
If they do, Franchione, Orgeron, and (possibly) Nutt could be available right now. Some other names will surely be available in a few weeks, too. And like I said, Johnson (Navy) could be in the mix, too. He runs the ball like Osborne likes.

Nebraska has received permission to speak to Gill
Buffalo athletic director Warde Manuel gave permission to Osborne, Nebraska's interim athletic director, to speak with Gill, Buffalo sports information director Paul Vecchio told The Associated Press. He said an interview had not yet been scheduled.
Among other names to surface in media reports are Rutgers' Greg Schiano, Cincinnati's Brian Kelly, Boise State's Chris Petersen, Navy's Paul Johnson and South Florida's Jim Leavitt.
