Leading candidates are every coach in football except Jim Tressell. Its the #1 job in college football. Im hearing names from Jon Gruden to Urban Meyer (Who reportedly had an out clause at Utah for Michigan).

I would suggest taking Greg Robinson from Syracuse.

PLEASE.

As much as would love Urban Meyer I don't think he will leave Florida for Michigan.

The guy who I think is gonna be #1 for Michigan is Les Miles. He is a Michigan guy having played and coached under Bo. I like the success he has had in the SEC and feel that he can incorperate SEC style play to a team that is in depserate need of a dynamic offense and fast athletic defense. I also think his success and personality coupled with Michigans rich history will allow him the luxury of picking the best of the best out of high school.

If that dosen't work out my next choice would be Teddford.

#1 Available job. #2 overall.

Urban Meyer had out clauses for Ohio State, Michigan, and Notre Dame too.

Miles has a buyout option for Michigan.

Its funny, for how "great" the SEC is, yet everyone wants to coach Ohio State and Michigan.

all the best coaches come from ohio and michigan.

Gruden wouldn't leave the nfl to coach michigan, no offense, that is a demotion, he's got too much pride to be considered int eh same group as wannstache, callhan, and groh.

I'd be thrilled as an osu fan for les miles to come coach UM. maybe he can bring all that sec speed with him

Yeah. Its amazing how all the fastest, most athletic players who are recruited lose all thier talent and speed when they come to Ohio State, then, when they are drafted in the first round to the NFL they get it all back again.

Les Miles to Michigan...even the rumor...helps Ohio State. LSU has a huge game with Arky on Friday and all the media wants to talk about is Miles to Michigan... I hope Arky takes advantage of the distraction.

What would be the #1 job then? Let me guess..

I really wonder how Michigan will go with this. They have pro style offense talent, so I would think they would go with a coach that runs a pro style.

Im praying they are serious about this and do not promote Ron English to head coach.

They have to think Ohio State here, which Im sure they are, and to beat Ohio State you have to out coach Ohio State, and Ron English is not that guy. We dont need a motivator, we need an X and O's guy.

I honestly don't know who you'll bring in... But Personally, I think Miles sucks. I highly doubt Dantonio would leave MSU, but I think he's a good coach. The LAST guy I wanna see there is Urban Meyer... but that would be a long, long, long shot.

Maybe Kirk Ferentz?

Ferentz is another name being mentioned.

Another one is Cam Cameron, wouldnt that be interesting. Im not going to judge him fully based on Miami's season, but Ohio State fans would have a ball if we hired Cameron.

Im sure Cameron is begging Michigan to bring him back. I believe Indiana ad one of the best offenses in college football when Cameron was head coach, so maybe he is just suited for College ball.

Urban Meyer to Michigan would be fantastic. It would be fun watching them beat on OSU 41-14 or so every year.

Cam Cameron wouldn't be the worst choice for Michigan. How funny would that be, 2 Dolphins coaches in 2 years leaving to go to college.

Ferentz is a good coach IMO. He could do well in Ann Arbor.

I just want UM to hire someone who will make them a contender every year. Michigan and Ohio State should be in the top 10 every year when they play.

Dude, give it up.

Florida was a great team...but Ohio State had everything going against it in that game:

Ginn, our best offensive weapon, lost on the first play.

Troy Smith gains 20lbs' during a 51 day lay off.

Anthony Gonzolez and Troy Smith need to be broken up in the locker room prior to the game, they almost went to blows.

Not saying we'd have won, but that game was doomed.

Troy Smith gaining 20 pounds had nothing to do with the beating he took. Him getting into a fight before the game shows a total lack of focus and discipline. Ginn wouldn't have won it for you. Those are all lame stretches to explain the beating you took at the hands of a clearly superior team.

So a healthy Ginn, the Troy Smith that won the heisman, and a focused team wouldn't have made the game closer? Believe what you want... we got beat and I don't care about it anymore.

I wish we got a chance to play that game again with a healthy Ginn and before Smith got fat..... and if he wasn;t fat there wouldn't have been a pregame fight.

But Florida was awesome that night.

I really don't care anymore, thats the truth. Troy Smiths legacy was tarnished a bit, and I'm pretty disappointed in him. Everything he has done since the Michigan game... the NC game, the combine, the rookie symposium, etc... has been an embarassment to the University.

I'm done derailing this thread.

4 of the top 5 teams in the current BCS poll grew up in or went to school in Ohio. (not even including those others that made stops at tOSU as assistants along the way ...i.e. Pete Carroll etc. )

#1 LSU -- Les Miles - grew up in Elyria
#2 Kansas -- Mark Mangino -- Grew up in New Castle PA (I know just over the border) but also went to YSU
#4 Mizzou - Pinkel - Grew up in Akron
#5 tOSU - Tressel - Grew up in Mentor/Berea

also

#10 Oklahoma - Bob Stoops -- Grew up in Youngstown
#12 Florida - Urban Meyer -- Grew up in Astabula
#17 Illinois -- Ron Zook -- Grew up in Loudenville

Ohio is the cradle of football. The best football minds and players come from Ohio.

Yeah... but like Carr said, Schembechler wasn't a Michigan man....

If they do get Miles I would imagine they would want him before the end of the season... they can't miss on a year of recruiting.

Miles will have a tough decision to make.

I know it's probably stupid to go with someone without head coaching experience, but I say, steal from Ohio State.

Jim Bollman.

I'm tired and totally ripped the wrong coordinator. I do this all the time. Bollman is solid. Heacock sucks.

Be my guest. Bollman is, IMO, the weakest link on our coaching staff.... his gameplans can be great at times, but if they're not his adjustments are lacking.

you're probably right. what do you think of heacock?

I'm not...see above ;)

I think Heacock is a decent DC, but his adjustments when things aren't working are horrible...see the Illinois game and the Florida game.

No way. The best football players come from the Sunshine State. Texas and Cali are the only states that can even argue that fact.

As far as coaches.....Ohio produces some great ones, but so does Pennsylvania.

Back on topic.....

this job is Miles' to turn down at this point. But you never know how these things play out. That being said, after talking with some people in the biz, here are some names I've heard (again, Miles is clearly the #1 choice right now, though):

Definite candidate who is under the radar:
Bill Sheridan (LB coach NY Giants)

Other college HCs I've heard:
Gregory Schiano (Rutgers)
Mike Leach (Texas Tech)
Brody Hoke (Ball State)
Rich Rodriguez (West Va.)
Kirt Ferentz (Iowa)
Chris Peterson (Boise State)
Brian Kelly (Cincinatti)
Jim Harbaugh (Stanford)
Urban Meyer (Florida)
Gary Pinkel (Missouri)

other NFL people:
Jon Gruden (Tampa)
Mike Trgovac (Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator)

Michigan assistants:
Ron English (Defensive Coordinator)

Yes, these are a lot of names. I'm just throwing out everyone I've heard. Some of these wil probably not even be called bu UM.

I'll post more if/when I hear anything.

If it wasn't going to be Les Miles, he wouldn't have gotten choked up while talking about the Michigan job at his press conference. He even referred to the "maize and blue." I'd be shocked if he passes on the chance to coach the Wolverines. I hope he does take the position; it would really make the rivalry that much more interesting with a fellow tremendous coach in Jim Tressel on the Buckeyes' sideline. Lloyd Carr became stale long ago.

When they ask him that question though they were beating around the bush about Les Miles who Carr is not a fan of since Miles stole Eugene (SP?) from him a couple years ago when he already commited to Mich

Still I agree the new coach doesnt have to come from the Mich fam but I think most Colleges like to stay in house

Plus I dont think its that tough of a descion for Miles if the $$$ is in the same ball park. From what everyone is saying its his dream job and when it boils down to it you may only get one shot at taking it so when its offered you should go for it

I mean if I was coaching another NFL team for 3mil a year and the Bills came knocking for 2.5 I'd be out the door :) lol

If Les Miles choses to come to Michigan and leave LSU, this would be like Schembechler vs Hayes. Miles is a feisty coach that would certainly have fun with the Ohio State rivalry.

I can see this game turning into Miles vs Tressel, just like it used to be Hayes vs Schembechler, it basically was bigger than the game IMO, that rivalry between coaches.

My question is, what if Michigan says "The job is yours, the money is right, but you have to leave right now." That makes it tough, leaving the #1 team in the nation before thier national title game.

If I'm Michigan thats part of the deal... they can't miss out on recruiting.

It will be interesting b/c if Miles wants to agrees to the job LSU will want it to remain Quiet but Mich def wont b/c they dont want to lose out on recruits
