The National Hockey League (NHL) today announced the Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins will wear vintage jerseys during the AMP Energy NHL Winter Classic, the League’s first regular-season outdoor game in the United States.

Buffalo will wear the white version of the jersey worn by the club from 1978-79 through 1995-96, which features the familiar circular logo of the charging buffalo over crossed sabers. Pittsburgh will return to the powder blue version worn from 1968-69 through 1972-73. This marks the first time the Penguins will wear powder blue since switching to black and gold in 1980. Both jerseys will be made of Rbk EDGE performance materials.

“The Amp Energy NHL Winter Classic is a great celebration of hockey returning to its origins,” said Brian Jennings, Executive Vice President Marketing, NHL. “Wearing vintage jerseys for this historic event is a unique way to pay tribute to years past while acknowledging the rich history of the NHL and its clubs.”

"The Penguins are proud to honor our history and heritage in this unique Winter Classic game,” said Pittsburgh Penguins team President David Morehouse. “We think it will be a great opportunity for our young players such as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin to wear these blue uniforms and establish a link with our teams of the 1960s and 70s."

"Wearing the classic white jersey is the perfect fit for a classic outdoor game," said Buffalo Sabres Managing Partner, Larry Quinn. "Our future retro jersey will be the dark blue sweater, so this maybe one of the last times our team wears this jersey. One more historic footnote to the game."

The Winter Classic Vintage edition jerseys for both Pittsburgh and Buffalo are available now for purchase in replica form on Shop.NHL.com.

The AMP Energy NHL Winter Classic will be played at Ralph Wilson Stadium, home of the National Football League’s Buffalo Bills on New Year’s
Day, 2008. NBC will provide live broadcast coverage of the historic game
in the U.S. In Canada, CBC and RDS will televise the event live. Radio listeners can hear live coverage of the game on all Westwood One affiliates across the U.S. and Canada as well as on XM satellite radio (channel 204).

Larry Quinn- "Our future retro jersey will be the dark blue sweater, so this maybe one of the last times our team wears this jersey. One more historic footnote to the game."

So I better rush out and buy it because it is not going to made ever again?
Get 'em while they're hot and still around!
Way to push the sweaters, Larry.
Not that I don't like the originals, I favor them %1,000 over everything they ever had.
But it always seems like Quinn gets some kind of commission every time a Sabres logo bearing good is sold.

ummm I don't see anywhere that the white jerseys will not be made anymore, just that they won't wear them. The Sabres haven't been wearing those jerseys for over 10 years and they still sell them just about everywhere hockey jerseys are found.

I see your point.
I guess I should have stated that from a marketing standpoint, that is what I equated Quinn's quote to mean. I have a habit of picking things apart.
He didn't actually come out and say that those sweaters were not to be made anymore, but he did put in the suggestion that it would be a rare and historic occurrence to see them worn by the team.
Just suggesting that is going to make more than some people think that they best go out and get it- either to be hip and with the times for the event or gobble it up for posterity before it is gone.
Some people are more susceptible to suggestion.
It looks like you are not one of the sheep and good for you.

I think Larry is totally wrong holding the vintage uniforms hostage like that...He should be teasing at the full time return of the vintage. Make the slug the third jersey instead. I think it would be a good business move and make both slug haters and huggers alike happy because they both would still be available...just their roles reversed.

The Sabres should take the momentum gained as the team will be outfitted in vintage uniforms during Winter Classic, capture that energy, and funnel it in as they re-introduce the "re-tooled" vintage jersey and make it the primary logo identity of the Sabres once again. The current "slug" logo jersey could now become the alternate third, keeping it available, and in my opinion should not alienate fans who maybe preferred the vintage look but purchased current merchandise out of impulse or of loyalty to support the team.

I just checked out the NHL.com shop, and they don't even have the right jersey for the Sabres on the Winter Classic page. The Sabres jersey don't have ties, where the Pens does. The pictures that I have seen the Sabres jersey will have ties on them.

Also does anyone know if the jerseys are coming with the Winter Classic patch?
