”Central Terminal: Saving a Buffalo Landmark,” a 30-minute video documentary produced by the Canisius College Video Institute, will be shown on:

WNED: Friday, November 16 at 10pm
Sunday November 18 at 3:30am.

ThinkBright: (Digital 43.3; Time Warner 21)
Sunday, December 2 at 8:30pm
Friday, December 7 at 12:30am

Produced by Digital Media Arts majors Kirsten Jahn ‘07 and Scott Richardson ‘09, the documentary traces the history of the building, its architectural and social significance, and the efforts of the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation to bring the building back to life.

The Canisius College Video Institute provides students with the opportunity to put their classroom lessons to work on projects that will benefit the college and the community at large. Students produce documentaries and promotional videos for local and international not-for-profit and service agencies that otherwise would not have the resources to tell their stories in this way.

The Canisius College Video Institute is funded in part by the John R. Oishei Foundation and directed by Barbara Irwin, PhD, chair of the Communication Studies Department.

I remember wandering through the Central Terminal with my friends at 1am back in 1995. The place was trashed and it was quite spooky, to put it mildly. We combed the whole place and even made it to the roof. The arches on the roof make perfect "reclining" chairs and you get a great view of Buffalo. The stairway to get there disappeared underneath thousands of papers that looked like someone tried to start a fire with. I'm glad they cleaned up the place and are restoring it; although I never would have believed it was possible considering the condition it was in at that time. Lots of water damage.

I have a question, which I guess might be answered by watching the documentary. The place is huge - it looks like it's as big as City Hall. What were all the offices used for? Were they all shipping offices?

At one point, there were 1,100 employees, running the gamut from clerical, to shipping, to police, ticket agents, Van Dyke Taxi, controllers, Red Cap porters, post office, restaurant, cocktail lounge, shoeshine, barber shop, you name it. It's 523,000 sq. ft. and the water damage is cosmetic. The structure is solid.

Mike, do you have any planned clean up dates coming up? I'd like to lend a hand.

I'll be posting updates here about events and work sessions. We do have people working on specific projects inside all winter, but they are BOCES sponsored. We're building temporary bathrooms in the waiting room and all the resources are grant related.
