Here's an interesting topic I've seen on another forum. Where would you split the state and what would we call WNY?

From Syracuse all the way left to Lake Erie.
Basically cut off downstate from the rest of the state. Then double what we charge them for water and power. Ohh. They can have Albany and all suburbs. Don't want any part of that crap house.

I agree, they can have Albany.

They already "have" Albany.

I got it, I got it!

I know it sounds crazy.... but, we could call it....

Western...

New....

......York!

I'm a GENIOUS! Lol! Actually, I've heard that thrown around for years. It would seem to be a good move for those of us from the WNY area, but what, if any, drawbacks would there be?

The funny thing is is that if you talk to someone from NYC...we up here are the ones dragging them down. It's obviously the other way around for us. The line should go from just west of binghamton north to utica and then over to watertown. Let them have the adorondaks (sp?). We could name the state Erie or Genesee or something. Drawbacks would be a loss of all respect from the rest of the country since we aren't involved with the word New York anymore.

Different "new" maps of New York?

Here's 1 idea: Cut off basically just the bottom corner.

Draw it diagonally up from where you both having it ending it the south and let them keep it from there to the northern Mass. border line.

because Albany does not do much for WNY BUT if the state were divided that could be fixed.

NO! People in NYC don't say that dipshit. I grew up in North Tonawanda and listenend to my parents and every adult up there bemoan the fact that NYC drags down the entire state. Only upon moving down hear in 95 or 96 did I really see it. New York State would be in much better financial straits without NYC in it. Over 75% of Medicaid expenditure comes from NYC. And almost half, that's right, of the state budget goes to that Medicaid. NYC kills the state. And you just have to look at all the benefits that neighboring NJ and Ct. get. All those well-off workers take their pay-check home to those states and leave the Buffalonians to pay for the tens of thousands of homeless or poverty-ridden people in the burroughs.

Pipe the hell down and don't chime in unless you have a clue about what you are talkng about.

This all leaves out some ancillary issues like George Pataki (a Peekskill guy) bringing big employers to the downstate area (because that's where his home and his constituents are) like IBM. A few years ago he put another big IBM division down here instead of upstate.

Your getting there. The line needs to be moved straight down to run through White Plains and Yonkers.

Close, I meant the other side of Binghamton through Utica and more east of Watertown in more of a straight line.

What would it take for a state to divide? Is it even possible?

We should pull admarc and his family out of there and then just carpet bomb the burroughs and all the burbs into oblivion. Put the NYS Air National Guard to good use. They are all in upstate NY anyways. :D

Cut the anchor chains to Long Giland and let it float off into the Atlantic. Or better yet sink it.

Demand the return of every drop of lake water sent to them at bargain rates.

And a refund of EVERY SINGLE killowatt hour of electricity stolen from the NYMO project in the form of state utility taxes (to subsidize NYC).

Make em' return the electricity too! Even if it means putting every damn New Yawker on a hamster wheel with generator cables attached to it. LOL

you want to know the real reason why it would never happen...the Democratic party would put in play a large number of electoral votes. Right not there is no doubt which way NY votes, a WNY could be a possible battleground state.

Take a can of paint, actually a few thousand cans, start below Binghamton and start spraying a diagonal line across to Mass. And if they step over the line then blast em'!

;)

Realistically, NYC should constitute itself as it's own state. With boundries including any part of NJ, NY, or Ct. that is drivable by a one or two hour commute. Therefore the people reaping the benefits of the high Manhattan wages would pay to keep the city (or state) afloat. That would put a huge crimp into NJ and Ct. and give some justified relief to the rest of NYS that bears the burden alone now.

I interned in Albany and was told that every year or so some assemblyman puts forth a bill for the division of the state, to satisfy his electorate.

I was told by one such assemblyman that it would never happen but that he had to introduce the legislation for political reasons. He also told me that NYC taxes actually carry the state and that if WNY separated it would drop below Mississippi as the poorest state in the union.

His bill proposed separating from Dutchess county down.

Does your dislike of this politician you've never met invalidate his reasons for introducing legislation to separate out Upstate from NY or for his answer for why he did it or his belief that the bill would never get out of committee or his assertion that upstate NY would be poorer than Mississippi if the bill became fact?

The division of the state would obviously affect his power and influence. That's first and foremost for any politician. First and foremost.

Since it affects his power and influence you can expect, as sure as a full moon every month, for him to project doom, gloom, and utter disaster.

Why didn't you hang him after you met him? Afterall, he is a politician. :D ;)

Ohh Aqua. Nothing he says is valid. You ought to know that.
