i didn't realize that Reno 9/11 was a ****ing documentary.
SANTA ANA – Irvine police have released the name of the officer who wounded an armed bank robbery suspect and inadvertently shot an X-ray technician working near the bank while trying to stop the man from escaping during a heist last October.
After a months-long investigation, the Orange County District Attorney's Office cleared Irvine Senior Police Officer Alan Day of any criminal wrongdoing in the Oct. 27, 2006 shooting outside the Wells Fargo Bank at 4850 Barranca Parkway in Irvine. But police officials had not made Day's name public until Monday.
Last week, Ramin Pirbazari, 25, of Irvine was sentenced to three years in prison after he pleaded guilty to one count of robbery and a sentencing enhancement for using a deadly weapon – a potato peeler.
The holdup began with Pirbazari armed with a potato peeler walking into a bank. It ended with Pirbazari shot in the wrist and Tasered, and the X-ray technician working nearby shot in the back by a stray police bullet.
"(Pirbazari) was very cooperative. He stated very clearly from the beginning that he went into the bank because he wanted money," said Deputy District Attorney Scott Steiner of the Special Prosecutions Unit, which handles all cases relating to officer-involved shootings.

The criminal got what was coming to him. The article said people thought the peeler was a knife. Cop has (in my opinion, apparently not the law though) an obligation to protect the public.
Now on the flip side....
The X-Ray tech. Now she ought to sue for damages. I mean if this guy was a threat where deadly force was absolutely required then you have to give the police some latitude. But it appears that he was running away when the shots were fired? How was he such an imminent threat where risk to bystanders was justified? And that risk manifested itself too in fact.

I don't think anybody, including MPW, will deny that there are bad cops.
Of course, there are bad lawyers, doctors, ditch diggers, engineers (yes Pete, there really are :D), actuaries, etc.
The obsession with finding every bad cop story is interesting though.
Maybe they are not the one's with little dick syndrome.

Well if I can flip the story again. Did the peeler guy turn around or turn towards someone when he fled? Cause if he did and I was armed I'd consider shooting.
Ohh. In response to your statement. Yes, there are bad cops. And I think that MPW would certainly agree. But where I have the beef is in institutional attitudes and **** ups. Anyone can find bad cop stories. Google has a billion of them.
It's the SWAT team breaking into the wrong house and killing some old lady that I'm concerned about. Or checkpoints. Or rude and disrespectful behavior to citizens. Or the stupid paramilitary uniforms of SWAT. Why do they need kevlar SS helmets and black suits anyways? To protect them from incoming mortar rounds? That's the stuff that I have a beef with.
I accept the good they do. They ARE necessary. I don't accept the abuses which I perceive as becoming more brazen over the decades.

Are they becoming more brazen or is the media obsessing with them more and more? Is the media reporting the initial story and then reporting the follow-up/correction on page 29 instead of page 1?
As for checkpoints, and you know I am fairly Libertarian as well, I see no expectation of privacy in terms of your condition when on the road.

Why's that Dilbert? May I see your papers?
What's the difference?
Regarding the former I believe for every one abuse reported 100 go unreported. That's my perception. That's why I have the issue.

another "bad cop" thread.
Bah.
Maybe we should just abolish every police department. Anarchy will reign. It will be survival of the fittest.
