NEW YORK (CNN) -- Topps Meat Co. on Saturday expanded a recall of ground beef from about 300,000 pounds to 21.7 million pounds, one of the largest meat recalls in U.S. history.

In a statement, the Elizabeth, New Jersey, company said the hamburger patties may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, a bacterium that can cause severe diarrhea and cramps, as well as other complications.

A statement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture said 25 illnesses are under investigation in Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Maine, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The ground beef products being recalled have a "sell by date" or a "best if used by date" between September 25, 2007, and September 25, 2008, Topps' statement said.

I don't know about you guys, but I pay more for meat that isn't shady.

I'm downright affraid of TOPS and Purdue and the mega-meat companies like that. I'm affraid of hormone laden milk. Preservatives scare me and you'll never convince me that they aren't a big part of the reason why so many Americans get colon cancer compared to the rest of the world.

Campbells chunky soup? Let me get this straight... They put hamburger meat in a can and set it at room temperature for a few months and i'm supposed to trust that i can eat that shit? HELL NO!

I'm all about fresh, natural food. I'll pay an extra buck per pound of chicken if i can be certain that the chicken i'm eating wasn't fed the parts of other chickens in it's life.

Our food industry is a mess. Forgive me for being a hippy, but since i care about all Bills fans please... for the love of god... stay the hell away from the big meat companies. It's not good for you at all!

It's not good for you at all!I also eat fresh and natural. I haven't bought red meat in four years or fish since I came up here in '01. As much as possible, I kill, clean, and butcher my own game. I do buy Italian Sausage, chicken wings and the occasional pork tenderloin.

One thing about hormone laden milk. I work in the dairy industry and alot of milk companies are taking steps to insure that the raw milk they buy is all natural. Farmers are being asked to have their cows inspected regularly and sign a contract certifying they use no steroids or recombinant bovine growth hormone. I would say in 5 years those practices will be virtually eliminated.

Whole Foods and down here - Doris' Italian Market and Butcher.

Costs more, but no hormones, no genetic engineering, and no incredibly sloppy slaughterhouses. WF has a pamphlet indicating their standards for the suppliers.
