What is the best way to mirror an existing install of XP sp2 (nlite) from a 40gb hard drive? I had my Dad in town over the weekend and sent him back an email box to use back home in PA. Unfortunately I only had a 40gb hd here before he left. Everything is loaded, updated, patched and set for the old man however his Brother wants to bring out a 300gb drive to upgrade for him. The rub is that Uncle isn't PC savvy and I'll end up advising over the phone through many cuss words. Does Norton Ghost still work? Is there a free utility that can mirror my Dad's existing drive properly? Are the retail drives like WD with their proprietory software a better option? Or should I just drive down and do it myself, starting over clean. Its been a few years since I've done this and I had the most success with WD drives prior to SP2. Any advice is appreciated - thanks!

Ghost will work as will Acronis and several others. They all have fairly straightforward interfaces and give very specific instruction on moving the present install to a larger drive. Another option is to install the second drive and leave the boot in with the OS on it. Install the programs and such on the 40GB but store all data on the larger drive. If he does this then the next XP install will effect only those things that would have to be reinstalled anyways and leaves the data in peace on the separate drive. Also, when he moves to a new PC he can just move the data storage drive over and avoid any conflicts with two OSes on a system.
