MONTREAL -- The NHL confirmed this afternoon a posting on the Buffalo Sabres' official web site that more than 42,000 tickets for the AMP Energy NHL Winter Classic were sold in less than 30 minutes after going on sale at 10 a.m.
The Penguins, who will play the Buffalo Sabres on New Year's Day at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y., had no comment. Only 1,500 seats were made available to Penguins season-ticket holders.
"It is very frustrating," said Greg Nardine of Peters Township, a full season-ticket holder for two years. "I do not understand how all those tickets could have sold in 10 minutes." (Boo freakin hoo)
According to Sabres.com remaining seats for the NHL Winter Classic are being held for Sabres season-ticket holders, club-seat holders of the NFL's Bills, the NHL, as well as players from the Sabres and Penguins. A statement released by the NHL said that tickets were also set aside for sponsors of the event.
story continues below.
The NHL statement left open the possibility of additional tickets becoming available at a later date.
Capacity at Ralph Wilson Stadium is over 74,000. Nearly 7,000 seats at the lowest possible levels are being obstructed due to television cameras for NBC's television broadcast.
Penguins officials are looking into ways to secure more tickets after receiving complaints throughout the day from full- and partial-plan holders that felt snubbed.
Passwords were assigned to season-ticket holders of the Penguins, Sabres, Bills and the Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays, for online purchases. However, all seats, even those set aside for season-ticket holders, were available at 10 a.m. -- and buyers could purchase as many as 50 tickets in some cases. Four tickets to the NHL Winter Classic were available on eBay.com for $1,499.99. http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/penguins/s_528105.html
