ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Nawaz Sharif's triumphant return to Pakistan lasted four hours.
The former prime minister landed in Islamabad on Monday after seven years in exile, prepared to challenge pro-U.S. President Pervez Musharraf, the army chief who deposed him in a 1999 coup. But Sharif was immediately arrested and detained at the capital city's airport by black-uniformed commandos, held for four hours, then hustled onto a chartered plane and flown to Saudi Arabia.
By refusing to let his rival re-enter Pakistan, Musharraf defied the country's Supreme Court, which ruled last month that Sharif had a right to return and contest upcoming legislative elections. Lawyer Hashmat Habid called Sharif's deportation Monday "an act of contempt of court."
Sharif supporters were furious and clashed with police in at least three places in Islamabad, the Associated Press reported.
