SALT LAKE CITY — Unbeaten heavyweight “Baby” Joe Mesi has pulled out of his August 18 fight against Sherman “Tank” Williams due to a back injury he suffered this week in training camp, according to a news release issued by promoters for the pay-per-view card.

Rich Danner of Pinnacle FiteNite told The Buffalo News that he was informed Thursday that Mesi would be unable to participate.

“I understand he’s been in therapy and working out in the pool,” Danner said by phone Friday from Las Vegas. “Joe was sparring Thursday and felt his movement was restricted, so with the docter he decided that rest was the best thing.”

Mesi’s advisor/father, Jack, reported that Joe’s back injury prevents him from training properly but that he will be able to begin training properly within two or three weeks, according to the press release.

“I am very sorry I have to miss this opportunity in Utah on Pay-Per-View with Sherman ‘Tank’ Williams,” Joe Mesi said in the statement. “But as all professional boxers know a big part of our sport is overcoming the setbacks.”

Williams was to be a step up in competition for Mesi.

Danner said Jack Mesi told him his plans are for Joe to face more difficult fighers in the next several months. With the promoter eager to match Williams and Mesi, Danner said he will propose to Jack Mesi that they reschedule the bout when Joe is ready to go again.

Unfortunate...too often in sports all the d-bags get all the glory, the good guys many times, have things go wrong.
