The guy in the hat is the infamous Eklund?? I can go on record as saying The Buffalo News' Tim Graham can't stand the guy. All he does is steal things from other outlets and pass them off as his own.

IS it possible? Sure. Does it seem likely? Not really. And after reading the "uncovering of Eklund" it is so very apparent that guys like Eklund would succeed at their task except for one small thing--or in this case one large thing.

Their Ego.

He wants to have it both ways. IMHO, his major screwup was the way that he packaged his anonymity. That and that ..heh heh small problem about his credibility. If I was as wrong as Eklund at work I would be unemployed. Major props to the PHWA for "saying it like it is".

It is interesting that his pride in being an "outsiders insider" (if that makes sense!) is going to be his undoing. IT is also very telling that the article mentions his relationships with player-agents. In hindsight that fact alone makes his (usually incorrect) trade speculations very noteworty.

Think of it this way: If I am a players agent--say like Don Meehan. My client Mike Peca wants to come back to Buffalo because his wife is homesick. I cant very well call the Sabres because of contract rules (that might be considered collusion under the CBA). But what I can do is tell Eklund (or his ilk) that there are rumors of my client and Buffalo and how Happy my client would be and how much of a bargain it might really be. Eklunk reports it, news starved Bucky Gleason--iced out of the loop because he is such a tool--picks it up and BANg--now we have a story plus Sabres management gets the message loud and clear and on the players (and his agents) terms.

Anybody see a problem with this type situation? Its not news, or journalism its manipulation. worse--since Eklund is "every hockey man" --there is no accountability....

And as far as some of the PHWA not liking him--good. The only plus in this situation is that occaisionally Eklund does bring up something that they wont write about causing them to chase his shadows....kind of amusing.

But Eklund, He is the victim of his own success. Good.

And in minor defense: I dont see Garth the same way, I think Garth is just the stick boy or bathroom cleaner for the Sabres or HSBC or something, trying to be famous for his tiny bits of feeble analysis.

The story about the supposed IM conversations with a certain blogger "Acid Queen" (wtf?) are quite interesting. The broad really goes to town on the guy, even more than the AOL guy.
