according to wgr there are high level talks between the nhl and espn about a return to espn2 as soon as the 2008 season. they are just preliminary but are allegedly higher ups talking

what does this mean? we get to compare lousy ratings to bad sitcom reruns on tbs and tnt should be interesting though

They should have gone to USA Network. It knows how to do sports,is part of NBC(which runs NHL games on the weekends)which gives them major cross-promotion on its many cable networks, etc. Apparently, the NHL has learned NOTHING from the last time ESPN had the rights and are acting just like the abused spouse,who-once again-goes back to their significant other who says,"Hey,I've changed!" only to find out too late that they haven't. Book it: The NHL will regret this move in a couple of years.

Question: Would you mind telling me how in the blue hell they're even going to find room for the NHL,even if it is ESPN2?

Nice how NBC thinks so highly of the NHL to not try to bring it to USA.

ESPN 2? I like it. Not too high-profile, but the ESPN anchors won't laugh at hockey anymore. Works for me. I need some Gary Thorne and some Steve Levy.

Thats the thing though, NBC apparently doesn't want to give it anymore coverage, because of the ratings, which in part has NBC to blame. Nobody is watching TV on Saturday afternoons at 3 or Sunday for that matter. At least on ESPN the games will be televised at night, along with some "double-headers" I'm sure. If the NHL ever wants to be relevant again - ratings wise - they NEED to go back to ESPN where they will get maximum coverage.

To answer your other question, I think there is more than enough room. How many times does ESPN2 have poker(not complaining, I like watching it), fishing, world strong man, etc. just filling in time slots? I think they would find a way.

And Tony Reali would let Tim Cowlishaw talk more than 7 seconds about hockey on "Around the Horn".
