Since the image is hosted at 'dixiegunworks' I suppose this could be an ancient design for a spent cartridge extractor.

That's my best guess... I've never seen anything like it.

My guess would be the end of a decorative curtain rod. Fit the curtain rings on to the pole, then stick that plug into the hollow end of the curtain rod to hold the rings on.

It's hard to say not seeing the whole thing. It could be a game call if there is a hole in the brass.

If not, it is probably a butt plug which Mik would be very familiar with.:D

Lucid, it's hard for Mik to talk out of his ass when he has that inserted. Maybe that's why he posted this.

This is a very rare M1855 .58 caliber Civil War tompion correctly made of beechwood with a brass tip and leather washer to keep moisture from the bore. Very complicated to make. New made.

Geez. I thought for sure moonpie would have gotten this. Yes it is a tompion, or alternatively a tampion. Put into the business end of a musket to keep out moisture, dust and dirt.
