Just heard on Sirius radio that the Sabres and Sharks are mulling a deal to send Patrick Marleau, Mike Grier, and a 3rd round for Danielle Paille, Jaro Spacek and two first round picks....we have also agreed on a contract with Marleau for 3 years 19 million...no link, just heard it on Sirius...take it for what it worth....

Mike Grier? I would start crying tears of joy. He's one of my all-time favorite Sabres. I'm going to trust you with this, JFK.

Thats a pretty detailed trade, along with contract numbers, so I find it hard to believe it could be completely fabricated. Although, I'm gonna wait and see if anybody else reports it before I get excited. Although even if it was Hockeybuzz it would make me pop wood at this point

It sounds good to me. I don't like losing Paille and 2 1sts but dumping Spacek and allowing Paetsch to step in sounds good.

Marleau has been dogged before but I think a change of scenery could do wonders for him. We all know what type of player Grier is and he would be gladly welcomed back.

EDIT:

I would try to work on getting one of the 1sts removed. That would be a huge hit to our farm system.

SabresFan220
July 29th, 2007, 6:01:32 PM
Then I suppose we reacquire Drury from the Rags for MacArthur and Kalinin right? Getting Grier back might be good for this team, but he didn't wanna stay when his best friend Drury was here and we offered him the same money. We all know how much his wife loved Buffalo, this could spark a divorce, lol. I think I'd rather get Brown back or Patrick Rissmiller. The Sharks are not losing that much in this deal, I think 2 1st rounders is too much, maybe a lower pick than that.

CoachC.
July 29th, 2007, 6:02:49 PM
I'm rounding up to the nearest 100K in each of these, btw........

Spacek (3.4 mil)
Paille (585K)
Total given up = $3,985,000

Marleau (6.4 mil on the reported "new deal")
Grier (1.8 mil)
Total taken on = $8,200,000

8.2 mil
-3.99 mil
Total added to payroll = $4,210,000

Add that to the $44,781,000 we are at right now and we have a total payroll of $48,491,000 without counting Paetsch. I counted Peters at 500K, but www.nhlnumbers.com doesn't have his cap # listed.

Bottom line: I don't see us making this deal without moving someone else, as well.

However, I did this quickly.....so feel free to correct my math if I'm wrong and/or missing something.

Marleau's cap hit would only be 4.167 mil a season because his cap hit wouldn't change until NEXT year after his contract runs out. I remember this because of the whole talk with Drury these past few months. The Sabres offered him an extension at a higher average salary even though they were at the cap because it wouldn't kick in until the next year. So this year we'd only be taking on roughly 2 mil more. Correct me if I'm wrong though!

You might be right.

Connolly, Roy, Kotalik, Vanek, Afinogenov, Stafford, Hecht, Marleau, Pominville, Gaustad, Mair, Grier.

Scratches: Ryan, Peters.

(That's a pretty sick group of 12 forwards, by the way. It's got a little bit of everything.)

Here's mine...

Vanek-Marleau-Stafford;
Pominville-Roy-Afinogenov;
Hecht-Connolly-Kotalik;

Any way it would be assembled, that is a ridiculously good group of forwards. I'm trying not to have this happen, but my hopes are sky high right now. If this rumor is true, it needs to happen.

Not sure if he would be capt. Anyways I do like your lines...I def think that it would be important to keep Marleau and Stafford together. Stafford could benefit GREATLY from his presence.

I just figured keeping the "RAV" line together would be good and also keeping Pommers with Hecht and subing Briere with Connolly would be good too. I feel that if this rumor isn't true that that'll end up being our top two line combos anyways.

Yeah. Also wouldn't this deal give the Sabres too many forwards? There was an article a couple weeks ago on the Buffalo News website that said there are 13 forwards on the team now, and the only one that can be sent down without going through waivers is Drew Stafford. This deal would give the team 14 forwards and the team will still be short a physical d-man. The good news is that Paestch would be in the top-6...unless the Sabres also sign Andy Sutton (which was rumored a while back also).

What channel and what time? My friend works at sirius in NYC I'll have him give me the name of the show and hosts.

two first rounders is too much.

...Well...take a look at the next two drafts....nothing big on the horizon until Tavares and unless you;ve got the #1 that year forget it.

A bird in the hand, as they say.

Interesting--if this is another source for a similar rumor....What gives with the Marleau stuff? Not that I dont like thoughts of him coming to Buffalo but why would they even talk turkey about him?

Lets see...78 points against....Daniel Paille? Jaro Spacek?
I am not big on Grier (and its okay that some are) but why would you package him (who was outspoken about leaving Buffalo) and your huge 78 point centerman ?

At first I thought, Salary dump? But that cant be because of the big Spacek committment. Then I thought, rebuilding? Naw, that cant be it, they werent in bad shape last couple years.

The Next two drafts arent rated that highly (yet?) so why trade a gritty blueliner and a marquee forward for a young guy, a blueliner that lost a little favor last year, and two picks?

Beats me. I would do it though. And they could keep Grier (IMHO).....

Nice work if we could get it.....if it was on Sirius that means we have two confirmed places (spearate ones) that have linked Marleau to Buffalo. Kind of cool.....maybe darcy is kicking the tires....

And so it goes....

I'd be pumped if this trade happened. Granted its probably rubbish, I'd take it in a second. Have Pat around for 4 years (the 1 plus 3 year extension) and easily becomes the best center on our team with a little more grit than Briere. I'd like to him him on my team right now to be honest. Total BS, they are going to camp with the roster they have, Regier pretty much said so in his interview with Shoop and Bulldog on Friday afternoon (07/27). If I remember correctly he said his priorities now are getting NP done and then looking at next years UFAs (Jochen, Soupy and Tree). These rumors are for the freakin dreamers out there who are still heart broken over Drury and Briere (I am too, but I'm not making up BS threads too make myself feel better). This is still a very good, very young hockey team with an excellent, experienced head coach. Let the season play out, this year they'll be able to do some shopping at the trade deadline, so cool it with the BS trade scenarios till after the first of the year.

I've developed an eating disorder because of my devastation of the falsehood of this thread. Thanks, JFK. I'm already down eight pounds since 6 p.m. because of my newly developed bulimia. I threw up an entire turkey!

I might be late to the game, and no offense to the poster, but I don't believe this for a second. I would like to get Marleau, but Grier chose not to be here once, why trade for a guy that didn't want to be here.

This "rumor" sounds fishy.

Hmm... yeah the more I think about it the less I think we'll take on another 6+ mil salary... I just don't see that at all.

Why does everyone have such a woody for Marleau. I watched him closely in SJ the last 8 years, and he's not a player you can trust to show up every night. He shows flashes of brilliance, but why do you think he's on the outs with SJ? The only thing I like about this deal is unloading Spacek. Paille and two firsts is too much.

I can confirm hearing this rumor as well and have searched high and low trying to find any type of link or mention to give to you all, but have come up empty. I know JFK off the board and he is a good buddy of mine. We both heard it yesterday. It was on Sirius Radio channel 122 around 5ish yesterday afternoon in the rumor part of whatever show was on(I dunno the show because I dont have Sirius radio personally).

I am going to continue my search for this and hopefully pull something up on it.

Jeez....

EVERYONE: Notice JFK's wording, will ya?

He says "take it for what it's worth"....he says "no link, just heard it on Sirius" he says that both organizations are "mulling a deal" which means a conversation may or may not have happend between both GM's.

There is not anything that he said here that should piss people off. Just because some of you want this deal to happed so bad doesn't give anyone the right to rake JFK over the coals if nothing happends. Lay off of him.

Nobody's angry about that. They're pissed about the possibility that JFK made the entire thing up from thin air.

Now that SabreNasty says he heard it, I tend to believe that JFK did, too, and that this rumor does exist.

loosers

Did you mean that everyone here is loose or that they lose? I don't believe there is such a word as loosers, maybe those pants are looser than the first pair. I think you were shooting for, I guess if there are two teams playing there has to be a loser.

I have no reason to take a thanks away from a poster that I have trusted before.I am guilty of wanting to see a player or two brought in to bolster this team.I am even more guilty of wanting said players to be impact players, maybe thats why I got so excited over the impact a post like this had.JFK and SabreNasty thank you for trying to brighten the summer for Sabres fans everywhere. Now, Darcy could you please try to obtain a Wayne Gretzky type forward and a Paul Coffey type defenseman so we can win our Cup? :arizona:

Hmm whenever he says anything it never happens...so the fact that he says it WON'T happen means it will?? We're at the nexus of the universe here in the world of sports rumors!!
