It's backloaded, which is going against the trend. That's interesting.

at least its the inverse of the Vanek deal...I'm thinking thats why they backloaded it.

I agree.

I think they're just trying to balance the payroll with consistency from year-to-year as they move forward with signings.

No problem either way. Roy's very young, so it's not as if he'll wear down toward the end of the deal. If anything, DR will be in his prime.

It is a good deal for sure.

I'm not happy about the money either, but it is what it is. All we can do is hope Roy turns into the next Briere. Lord knows he has the upside to do so.

At least if he does get better... he can't complain he isn't getting paid enough since his salary goes up every year. I think its a fair deal. With the money everyone else is getting, I would expect him to get around that much money from almost every other team too.

How much do you want to bet?

Question, why does it really matter if they backloaded his deal? His cap number remains constant through the length of the contract, the difference is what he actually gets paid per season which only affects his trade value as the contract progresses. I believe his cap hit number will remain $4 million a season unless there are incentive related bonuses that change it.

It's for internal business purposes. Tom Golisano has a certain figure that he wants made for player payroll this year, regardless of how the NHL cap goes. According to the cap, and as far as the NHL is concerned, the Sabres are at $44 million excluding Paetsch, but in actual numbers, the Sabres are at $43.5 million (give or take) this year. It's all about team budgeting, which can't be determined by the cap figure.

I have no problem with the salary structure, he will grow into the deal, he will still be getting better by year 6, or just reaching his peak. At least that is the plan.

By the way, I'm probably purchasing a Roysie jersey, so you can lay off me. My pops talked me into DR being the next Briere, only more multidimensional. I'll sign up for some of that through 2013.
